Have just jumped into the Defender and she won't start. Battery is
completely flat (interior lights on very dim).

Jumpered up to donor vehicle, and battery light is illuminated on dash with
starter switch in lock position. Turn key to start, battery light goes off.

Got enough charge into the battery after half hour to get Defender started,
battery light goes out when running, comes on again when switched off.

Alternator is very hot after 15 minutes running, and smell of electrical
burning in vicinity.

Obviously that is the most likely cause, but can anyone help me with
understanding the fault indications (i.e. battery light)?

Regards
