Hi folks,

Just done a pile of recent mileage records to check our 101's fuel economy.

Ours is recording around 10 miles to the gallon unloaded, 8.5 dragging a
a loaded trailer. Is this fairy 'nuff, or should I be looking for better
? I am not heavy footed in it. Its just been tuned up and it actually
sounds pretty sweet, Martyn complemented us on it.

I have an electronic ignition to go in, when all me round 'tuits arrive.
Will that boost economy worth a damn ?

Steve

Sounds low. Best unladen I ever got on a long steady run was 16mpg but
that was exceptional. 12 - 13 would be more usual but down to to 9mpg
towing a 1.5t tracker trailer and the back full of kit. I am renowned
for having a heavy right foot!

How accurate is your speedo/trip meter?

Hi Sean,

Good question - he's on bar grips still, so presumably within 10%, I
say, hopefully.

How accurately do you think these LPG pumps will "fill" a tank ? There
seems to be some variation.

Steve

I think I have misunderstood your original question, teach me to read
things properly!! My figures are on petrol but I reckon you are still a
little low. The electronic ignition may make some difference, it will
stay in tune a lot longer and give more accurate timing and dwell. Plus
you can add a module to vary the timing to suit petrol or lpg.

...at current prices I am running purely on LPG, theres a hole in my
petrol tank too, so I am putting a second 110 litre LPG tank instead.

Time to fit the ignition then. Where is that ballast resistor hidden ? I
bought a direct coil rather than a ballasted one, so I need to eliminate
the resistor.

Steve

Should be just below the coil. Need to isolate the wire that comes from
the starter motor and use the other one from the ignition to the coil,
they are both the same colour with no trace.

He hasn't. Its off down the motorway, counting marker poles.

Quite a lot of variation, mind, if you keep records, measure from
"full" fill to the next "full" fill. I'd say 10mpg is pretty poor.

I'd expect at the very least, 20 percent better, at the very best, 65
percent better :)

My resistor is right behind the coil where you cant get at it easily
(or atall in my case!)

You can pull the wires off it though.

My ballast resisor died last year and its only now that ive removed
the compressor that i can even see it.

Is your main LPG tank a 110 litre? Is that fitted down where the
battery box should be?
I've just started measuring up for mine,.

"full" fill to "full" fill is what I based all my numbers on.

Mines fitted in the flatbed, behind the battery section between there
and the nearside wheelarch.

a 120 litre LPG tank fits nicely where the battery box on my ambi used
to live!

If you are thinking of DIY LPG, I can strongly recommend Tinley Tech
www.tinleytech.co.uk Their kit was excellently priced, contained
*everything* and the installation book was very comprehensive! No
contact other than a satisfied customer blah blah.... 120 litre tank
with fittings for SU's and everything needed to fit was not much more
than £500

Pray its the tripmeter then. Please.

Is that that big handle with the red knob ? I thought that was for the
ejector seat!

Which is fine when you have SUs mine had Zeniths, and I had to make my
own injector blocks.

Ta!. Did you weld up a frame to fit it in?. Any snaps of the completed
item?

I've just bought and fitted a kit from car-gas in stoke on my car and
they were great. Friendly guys and knew what they were doing (and know
their landies!)

I got a bit of change from £500 and that included a full tank of gas
and an hour and a half or so of their labour finishing off my tank
fitting as i managed to bugger it up and cut one of my pipes too
short! They set it all up too.

The 101 is getting a kit from them!

I got one of these that bolted onto the carb on my saab (which is a
CD150 same as on the landy motors):
http://www.zen68482.zen.co.uk/yellow99/05-10-25/Image021.jpg

It went on between the carb itself and the round adaptor that holds
the air hose from my airbox.

The fittings ive seen for the V8's go inside the intake elbows and are
'donut' type things.

Did you get it tuned up properly after your problems a while back?

Could it be that locking rear diff adding some drag?

Then again ... Welsh roads are not really a fair benchmark for mpg tests...
especially with a lathe and a brazier in the back. The manual for my Renault
Laguna claims that if I drive with my window open I will get 4% less economy
and recommends using air con. God knows what running with the tilt off does
then ;0).... As a point of note I think the renault book is pants as I get
29 mpg Air con on and around 34mpg air con off, I'll stick to opening the
window me thinks until the Hay fever strikes again.

I'm expecting much better performance from Morph when I finally get him back
together given he's been running on seven cylinders since I've had him :)
