I know there is a 'controversy' over 101 ambi MoT's. Summat to do
with Class 4 and Class 7. Personally I usually find a few Class A's
useful about MoT time...

So, about to try out a local test station. If they start wittering on
about it not being a car test, what do I say? Do I care?

Take it to a place that knows the difference. It's not just about passing the 'test' it's about knowing
the vehicle *you* are driving is safe enough for a basic set of standards. The roadworthiness is
irrelevant if you don't feel safe driving your own car!

What does it say on the V5 - ambulance or camper van, if either of those
then show the v5 to the man and ask him to look up exceptions in his testers
handbook

Technically I believe its over the limit for a class 7 which is 3.5 tonnes
anyway so it would then be a ministry test so the above should be good
enough

The dual purpose vehicle that you can get a GS thru on does not apply to
ambi's as they are too heavy (I believe the weight limit on that is actual
weight on gross)

On the otherhand I could be talking cr*p - its happened before, especially
after an evening of beer & chocolate

Phone DoT Bristol and ask to speak to the chief examiner to get a definitve
answer. I had a load of crap when I bought a new 110 CSW in '97. I was told
by numerous people including the examiner at Tilbury commercial vehicle Dot
test centre that it did'nt need an MoT at 12 mths; he even photocopied the
relevant bit showing it was a dual purpose vehicle etc. etc.
After all that when I went to tax it again at 18 mths old ( 6 + 12 ) I was
asked for an MoT as it was a 12 seater !!!! Even though they cannot test
the 6 crew seats as they are'nt covered in the regs. Blah blah blah.
I still don't know what it is; Kens idiots won't give me exemtion from the C
Charge because my V5 does'nt give the seat capacity.

Bunch of no hopers

( except of course the guy who posts here and is an examiner) :)))

Apart from Rich's comments, I can recommend a local (to me) testing
station with an evil sadistic bastard who will test it on a 'normal',
but he will not pass anything he's even the slightest bit unhappy with
(which is fine with me). I think his first words were something like
"feck off, I'm not testing that" when I took Grumble in. Provided
you've kept your appointments with Doctor Warren, you'll have little
to worry about IMO, as Warren does a pretty good 'unofficial' test in
his own right.

Mines down on the v5 as a camper van, and ive found a local testing
place who specialise in camper vans. That makes it much easier!

I'm trying the 'self-sufficiency' thing! The Evil Sadistic Bastard
did the last two on the 101, and passed it both times. He also missed
the missing petrol cap on the Discovery, which amused Warren no end...

Taking it to Warren realistically entails a full day off work, plus
having Mandy drive me 40 minutes into Sheffield in each rush hour,
which doesn't go down too well. So if I can get it done locally I can
save 'taxi points' with Mandy for times when it needs proper fixing.

There's a local guy who's very honest, doesn't rip me off, but admits
that he doesn't like the 101 or know very much about them. If he
turns up owt drastic I'll take it to Warren for fixing.

quite frankl I have no idea but in the days when I drove a limo it might
have been registered as a private car but no-one had a ramp capable of
taking it so I took it to the council to be MOT'd not that it ever failed
for tis an anathema for any vehicle of mine ever to fail an MOT :)

I probably shouldn't say this (shameful plug) but if you fancy
another trip into Sheffield one evening/night I would be more
than happy to test it but bear in mind I am an Evil Sadistic
Bastard as well

I've an idea that in law all 4x4s are dual-purpose vehicles. Whether that
means you can get a bedford MK tested, I dunno :)

Hell he doesn't have to like it, just fix it then tell you which brazier to
put your hard earned into.

But if the beddi was kitted as a campervan then it could be done on a class
4 - friend is getting a dodge 4x4 7.5 tonne truckkitted out as a camper and
it will then be a class 4 test

Funny thing is that 4WD does not feature in their definition of dual
purpose, also I was out by 40kg.
