Becoming a country Vicar means Land Rover time

Well it said to say "hello" to people and "introduce" myself.

So - Having been doing something else for the last few years I'm becoming a country vicar of 7 rural villages just north of Gloucester. The delights of country lanes, the flooding of the river severn and farm tracks has meant that my Rover 75 will be carried off to an early grave if put the poor old girl through much more bashing and I need to purchase a Land Rover (the 75 is staying part of the family). We've been pondering Disco or Freelander and have settled on a Freelander - its a size thing.

Well I've got up to 3k to spend - yes I only work Sundays so don't earn very much. I'd like it to be a 98-00 model (thank you Mr Car Tax) I know I want a diesel and as we're hoping to adopt later this year I need something that will fit children (plural) into it plus all the paraphernalia that comes with them - apparently. Plus won't leave me as the new vicar begging a kindly farmer to drag me out of yet another ditch and becoming the laughing stock of the local NFU and WI.

So any advice out there? People keep repeating a "td4 td4" mantra to me but from what I've seen on the forums many of you love your L series engines. So here's a newby after some good ol' buying advice - all wisdom (or not) gratefully received and may whoever make us truly thankful....

are you sure you've joined the right forum ?

you'll get a lot more vehicle for your budget if you buy a disco

an early 300 engined Disco would be my choice, but would you take the advise of an agnostic ?

Do you believe in aliens...if not then stay away from freelanders. A nice disco would do you fine.

yep, i'd have to agree - there's some smashing discos out there and will do you better than a freelander. the thing about freelanders is that they are classed by land rover themselves as an 'entry level' 4x4 - if you are seriously going to be travleeing green lanes, a freelander just won't be up to it. true they have four wheel drive, but they lack the grunt.

Disco - Don't be mislead by salesmen; or other owners. The people on here know their stuff. A disco will be visiting your parishoners (spelling?) long after the freelander has found a free land to inhabit.

I hope for two things...

1. You buy wisely and get the best vehicle for the job (Disco-Disco-Disco)
2. You remain part of this forum and interject whenever possible to bring some balance into the heretics' lives who are abundant!

Seriously... welcome. There will be plenty fun made but you are most welcome and being a (priest? vicar?) I am sure you will be thick skinned enough to tell the worst offenders to go to .... err.... somewhere less pleasant than here.

how I did laugh-buy a discovery, or if your a sadist and repent-defender. If your god and wallet are forgiving a softroader-gaylander.

I agree with them, you'll get a lot more motor for your 3k if you go for a disco and it'll see you visiting a lot more parishoners in their hour of need than a freelander would ever do and you can get a hell (sorry) of a lot more kids stuff in it aswell.

Hope you make the right choice and welcome to the loonyzone from an agnostic living in Walsingham (a village with 13 churches).

if you want a 98-00 diesel freelander then you only have the L-series to choose from, luckily its the best engine.

Welcome to LZ, I'm not sure but you might be our first Vicar. Well the first to admit they are a Vicar. As said before I do recommend the Disco and you will get far more car for your money. I would wholly recommend that you drive both before you commit.

I'm with the disco guys, freelanders are riddled with too much expensive electrickery to go wrong, if you go for one without the electrickery they aren't so bad, just you wont have ABS/TC for when it does turn slippy.

Also for 3k you could have a 98 (or there abouts) V8i ES Auto on LPG even at 'now' prices, wait till weather predictions change and prices drop and you could probably get a Disco 2 for that money (but they has electrickery bits again) so you would probably be better off getting one of the last 300 series discos (I would go for an ES V8 auto LPG but hence the name GasFiredDisco) and using left over cash on stuff like a winch for when the weather turns bad then you can pull yourself out if you get stuck.

If ya looking at '98-'00 then ya after the oldest of the freelanders and many will be showing their age. Search on here for their common problems (there's plenty of threads), and the checks you should be carrying out when ya go to look at one i.e VCU check being the big one.
I dont mean to jump on the band wagon but if ya going to need space for more than one kid plus gear then i'm not sure the freelanders the way to go. They barely have more space in them than ya average family hatch, actually i think my old focus probably had more usable space inside. Whereas the disco i decided on getting has acres of space.

Whatever ya get for your budget ya can afford to be picky
