Morning all…another stranger one perhaps. When accelerating in my 4.0 V8 (Thor) I hear a strange sound from under the bonnet - like rushing coolant being forced through the cooling pipes. Other than a very slight weep from the join between metal and rubber pipes/hoses to the heater matrix there doesn’t appear to be any significant leaks, the level in the header tank is fine, and the temperature gauge reads normal. When stopped the engine doesn’t sound or smell likes it’s overheating. The only other thing I’ve noticed is a small puddle under the header tank, but again coolant levels appear ok. Maybe I have air in the system? Any advice as ever would be greatly appreciated. I intend to change all the heating/cooling pipes and hoses in the New Year, including the header tank and radiator, just because of the age of the vehicle. Just a good overhaul really. Many thanks!

If there is air in the system, you will hear it swish round.
You need to sort the leaks ;)
Thanks Kermit - thought air may be the culprit. Yeah the leaks are a top priority. I’m hardly using the car at the minute as I have other stuff on the go, but I’m aware of them and feel that rather than just fixing current issues I may as well overhaul the system before I start to use the car regularly. Many thanks!

Hi all, hope everyone is still surviving Covid? Further to my last post I have fixed the coolant leak in the engine bay, however, the heater matrix is definitely leaking and needs changing. I understand that some people on here have changed the matrix for an Audi/Nissan one…but which one should I specifically look for (i.e. from what model/year of car?) Any advice as usual is greatly appreciated! Cheers and stay safe.

Visit PaulP38.com and search for heater core replacement - Audi. I did it without removing dash as in photo no2 I just drilled all round screw to remove as it wasn't going back in anyway

Hi chaps, I am about to replace the heater matrix on my P38 having replaced the radiator, thermostat and water pump. You have kindly recommended the Nissens, and I wonder if I will need any additional fitting components for the job? I have seen these two on eBay…are either of these the model I should get? Many thanks!

Nissens 70230 is the core you need. It is an excellent conversion dispensing with all of the O ring drama.

Sort of. My Mikalor clips didn't arrive (and still haven't incidentally) so I used some bog standard Jubilee clips I had lying around the garage. The sods keep coming loose where they join the heater matrix and of couse it is an utter ****** to get at. If it wasn't for that I'd be very happy. Moral, make sure they're decent clips!
