Propshaft crossthreading

Took my front prop shaft of to make it easier changing the gear box oil.

Anyway long story short I've buggered the thread on the bolt, putting it back on (was rather fed up so tried to rush it)

Is it a big job to take the circled flange off, to replace the bolt? Am I better of cutting old bolt of and replacing wrong way round to others ?

To do it the right way round you need to remove the flange (big nut in the middle) & remove the circlip.

After you've removed the brake drum by taking out the two countersunk screws:
Lrcat
Remove nut 13
Steel washer 12
Felt washer 11
Pull flange off.
Remove circlip.
Remove offending bolt.
Replace in reverse order.
The felt washer is a seal to stop oil leaking down the splines. IIRC some just use a smear of RTV (or other sealant) under the steel washer.

ETA. No, it isn't a big job.

Fortunately/ unfortunately it's the front prop. Does this make a difference?

How bad would it be just running with 3 nuts and bolts?

To do the job right would only take about 10 mins.
Think if you put the bolts the other way you catch a flange

Front prop bolts are different to rear on transfer box they only go on one way as theyr'e not captive like rear,I dont see what his problem is just done some and front is same as rear on diff...

I think the original ones go in from the other side, cant see how it makes a difference tho. I did mine same as you

You'd have to take the transfer box flange off to do it that way...no room to side bolt through with flange fitted...

It's on the other end to the diff, side next to gear box. Is the flange easy to remove does anyone know. As can't get old bolt out without either cutting it or removing flange

Just cut it off and put the new one in the other way. You are meant to replace the nuts after removing them too but most people don't bother

I expect it would impact balance and the life of the bearings

The opposite end of the propshaft from gearbox the bolts go through with nut on diff side so you can get the propshaft out...just cut them all off and replace...

Yes the flange is pretty easy to remove. Once the centre nut is off it's not usually too hard, and mine have never even needed a puller. It's probably quicker than cutting through any bolts. Then the bolts are held in place by a big circlip that goes round the shank of the flange. The bolts are typically 3/8" UNF, unless someone has replaced them previously.

It's the front prop he's working on not the circled in pic so no circlip...
