Power Steering Pump

So I've had a few mornings of late where the steering pump was making a noise on initial manouvers but then cleared , anyway 3 days later and on way home tonight from work , excessive pump noise when turning and arriving home , fluid is peeing all over , the spray looks to be coming from the 3 pipes coming from the top of the pump but was so much fluid spray it was hard to tell , even the top of the reservoir was covered , dried everything off and tried the steering on full lock when standing still and nothing is showing fluid wise , no spray , any one experienced this ? is it best to just order a new pump or is there a way of finding the bleddy issue , Thanks in advance , 1988 19j landrover 110 pickup

There are only two pipes at the pump, one is low pressure from the reservoir and high pressure from pump to steering unit. Not spraying now as nothing left in system ?

Thanks for the feedback, no there was still plenty fluid in reservoir, definately 3 pipes going in at the top, 2 identical size nuts on the pipes and 1 larger nut , all close together in triangular formation

The steering box on my Ninety only had two pipes, as @tottot describes.
But I have a vague memory that some Ninety/One Ten had a different kind of steering box.
I might remember later what the two kinds were called.
In the meantime, I suggest posting a clear picture of the component you are talking about.

That is a power steering box. I can't see the pipes, because they are on the other side. But I assume you can count to three, so taking your word for it.
From memory, that is not the same box that was fitted on my 89 Ninety.

Are you absolutely sure that the liquid you are seeing is power steering fluid?

It should be red, and reasonably clean. If you are seeing something that looks like used engine oil, it probably is. 19js are notorious for spraying oil out of all kinds of places.

Where you can see the 1 pipe in the 3rd pick , just to confirm there are 2 others into those other apertures. Initial research suggests fairly expensive to renew so automatically thinking to replace seals if that's doable at home with a medium talented spanners. , I'm thinking it's one of these 3 pipes causing the issue but if one is just the gravity fed then I must be looking at the other 2. I was hoping this was a regular issue accross the board and someone could point the finger at the culprit

Yep relatively clean say pinky colour , just the noise issue and fluid in the area suggested steering box.

check input/output shaft(leaking seal)
Check pipe tightness, reservoir & from pump.
Check bleed nipple
Check reservoir
on a freezing cold morning the lower seal can freeze as water spray hits it. Once it’s turned a few times & engine bay warms up every thing sorts it’s self out.

I will get her into the garage under the light tomorrow night and inspect further, will update following, without doubt I realise this could be anything and unrelated to the steering noises

Just a thought, but have you recently topped up the PSF?

No not topped it up , even with the initial leaking it was still within the dipstick marks but after a 2nd run I'd imagine it's low, steering started to become heavy and notchy

coke can size but double the capacity , brown in colour , possibly two parts fitted together bit like how they make expansion tanks , are the two pipes to the reserviour under pressure, these are rubber pipes about 25mm dia with the smaller pipes joined to them.

There is a little breather hole in the side of the cap,where if it’s over filled,fluid sprays everywhere.(especially if it sprays towards the fan)

Just nipped out and tried to get a decent pick, reserviour is totally drained now, I've dried up the area , hence not much fluid showing ,

Not under much pressure, although that doesn't mean they can't leak.

The one that is under pressure is the pipe from the pump to the box. Check all the pipes with great care, I have known the pipes to give trouble more often than the boxes.
