right ive fitted a boost guage it goes to 1.1 bar on my 200 so i think its fine ,the fuelling was messed up by someone not me , and ive been trying to set it so ,a it drives ok not loads of black smoke before turbo comes in and it goes pritty well. i dont want a race truck but when i first put this engine in in 2004 it had a really lovely punch to it , so im nearly there , so on a long big hill it goes ok ish but it is not as powerfull and with foot flat on the floor my egt is 740 and it goes down , im going to fit a twin pass intercooler next week so i can open up the fuelling slightly does anyone have a 200 300 with an egt guage and whats your settings thx allan

I have one on my 200TDI. It’s almost completely standard, no boost gauge so I’m not sure exactly what boost it’s producing.

Mine will top out at 540-550ish on the longest hills in the area. I have turned the boost pin around 45degrees or so, but other than that nothing has been changed/adjusted. I’m waiting for the summer months to be over before I go adjusting mine any further. I have noticed that at -4degrees it was around 30degrees lower EGT, than the same hill, at 8-9degrees. I think that will make a huge difference at 25-30degrees in the height of summer.

I also tow a 1 ton folding camper, so need to check the EGT while towing that too.

I put a boost gauge on mine and If I thrash the Landy the gauge can get to just under 1 bar. Standard driving it gets to about 3/4 bar. I've not touched the FIP.
I've only read threads about FIP and turbo adjustments, but 740 degrees sounds very high IIRC.

I have a 300tdi and spoke with the tech guys at Garrett about this same issue. I was told that 1330f was max for the turbo by Garrett so just to play it safe I run around 1150f max at my elevation but keep in mind as you climb in elevation the fueling ratio stays the same so they will run hotter with more fuel, less air.
I live at 8000ft and routinely drive to 12000ft so that may not be an issue for you.

Measured pre turbo. if you measure it post turbo you are just guessing.

1300 is fine as a max as long as you have a gauge pre turbo.

EGR plate is before the turbo on a 300TDi.

Tony is right the plate is pre-turbo on the 300tdi, sorry, I was thinking of the one on my '85 524td, it's after. The EGT sensor probe tip should sit mid way in the exhaust stream, so I bougt one that is 2" long to get it there.

It is.
I think what you want to do is try and adjust the pump such that you get the performance you want with the min amount of smoke. You then want to watch the egts as you push it up one of those long grades you refer to. I usually downshift @ 1250. The temp drops immediately when you do.

Under throttle, low pressure, on the boost guage, equates to high EGT's and high pressure (good air flow to take away high temp's) equates to greatly reduced EGT's.

Just remember that Aluminum melts at 1220 f. The cylinder head on a 300tdi is Aluminum. Yes it has cooling water jackets that help but the turbocompressor housing is also aluminum with no water cooling. I am sure there is a way to calculate the amount of heat soak to the aluminum compressorhousing to figure out how high you can push it. Cylinder heads are expensive if you warp or crack one on a 300 tdi so play it safe by a couple hundred degrees. Ask me how I know.

1328 constant pre-turbo. I try to keep mine below 1000 max. It normally cruises at 65mph between 550 and 700 hundred depends on the load/terrain. I´ve touched 1100 for short periods of time though. Anyways I have the 2.8HS TGV turbo on my 300Tdi.

This was going to be my next question, I thought maybe my EGT sensor was no good as I wasn't ever over 750, usually hovering about 500.

Looks like I have some wiggle room....

I'm planning on ordering an EGT kit (gauge & sender) from eGauges and install the sender on the EGR blanking plate. To confirm: the EGR blanking plate is pre-turbo, right? So this location should give an accurate reading?

Second question. Has anyone ordered the kit from eGauges before? Do you know if the sender is long enough to fit in this location for a proper read? The site doesn't say how long the included sensor is.

Yup, the EGR plate on a 300Tdi is pre-turbo.

I also ordered the VDO kit from eGauges. It will come with a bushing that the probe bolts to. I had Josh (crash303) TIG weld it on to my EGR plate at an angle so that it was sitting in the exhaust stream.

I can take pics in a day or two when I finally get home.

X2. I've touched 1100 maybe once. around a thousand and I'm laying off a bit on the throttle. I just replaced a cracked head and don't want to do that again. I don't know what caused my cracked head, but it must have happened before I installed my EGT gauge. Now I'm smarter.

yes thats what i had the egt is mostly on the lower ,like 300 400 on bypass ect and lower it only climbed up to 740 and then reduced quickly but the temp was ok on the engine as its never overheated , ive always watched out for that .
 
@allan downes I have a tuned 300Tdi - full width IC, and tuned pump. EGT probe is where the EGR valve was..

IF you are anywhere near 740, I'd suggest it'll end in tears, and quite quickly. These temperatures will anneal the alloy head, and you can guess what happens next.

I have been told, and it is backed up by Internet searches that the head is Ok to about 719C - but, and it's a big BUT - at 720C it's all over - ECT will be irrelevant at this point IMHO, and in any event, you are not monitoring this with the standard sender and gauge - it is simply a guesstimate, and probably a poor one, and simply unable to respond in a timely manner to such an extreme situation.....

I'd suggest extreme caution, and that you speak to someone who has more experience than me. Have a nosy here,

Also , as above, 1250 F is 676.667 C - so "safe" enough, given the figures I mentioned above....

As I said earlier I'm absolutely no expert in this, just done some reading around the subject. Monitoring the EGT is done as a guide to the air/fuel mixture. This is important as when you play around with the air/fuel combo you can be tinkering with engine failure.
 
Hi Allan,

If you do a search for Boost ring , you will find where @battenburg suggests iirc a limit of 650C. I start to calm down as my 300tdi starts to head towards those figures. Mine has a pin and ring, and the pump has been slightly adjusted, But I did wonder how std the fuel and star wheel were when I got it originally..

My EGT is fitted to the EGR blank on the exhaust.

hi thanks guys ive only today started looking into it and think i might put the truck into somone as they can either look at the pump as someones played with it and ive been trying to get it right
