LR Virgin - Am I one cog short of a gearbox??

Hello,

I've been a life long fan of all things Land Rover, but I've never bitten the bullet.

The time has come for me to replace my 2007 VW Touareg and I was going to chop it in for an X5... until I found myself looking at Vogues and RR Sports on Autotrader.

Of course I've read all of the horror stories about the Range Rover reliability issues, but I still keep coming back to the idea...

Ideally I'd like either a Vogue or a RR Sport; great condition, one owner, 2010 onwards with a full J/LR service history and a low mileage (less than 70k)

I've got 15-18k to play with

I am not a mechanic and don't have mechanic chums

So my question to you wonderful people is.... Am I barking mad?

Would I be able to get a car that fits my criteria?

Will keeping it on the road cripple me financially?

If you think it is possible, where should I be looking to find my dream car? I'm based in West London but happy to travel.

Also, when I've found the car, what is the best way to ensure it's not a stinker? AA/RAC? Or can anyone recommend another organisation/spanner jockey who can guide me through the oily darkness?

Help me LR enthusiasts... you're my only hope!!!

I understand that being barking mad is a requirement not an impediment.
Maybe someone on here would volunteer to view the vehicle with you. I believe that booze and Midget Gems are the primary currency denominations.
It won't necessarily cripple you if you can wield a spanner. If you need to go to a dealer for every job then you might need many pounds. Probably better not to spend every pound on the purchase and leave a healthy war chest.

i own a D3 and can only really help in a small way regarding the sport , as the D3 and sport have the same running gear, just a different shell

later sports would have the D4 engine as they have the twin turbos

about either getting someone to come with u or if not get a full AA/RAC inspection done

ensure u get a good warranty with it

they are extremely nice to own, but buy with care , otherwise they can turn into serious money pit

also have to factor in, will u be doing all the work urself or a garage , dealers now charge £120 per hour plus vat

if u do buy one, buy a decent diagnostics , the one to go for is the iid made by gap

as u live in west london , have u checked out insurance costs and taxing it

Taking all of the above into account. May I point out that a choice between an RRS and a Vogue is slightly off. Whilst RRS is a model, Vogue is a trim. Before the growling starts, I suggest you make yourself aware of the difference. I think you may have meant a choice between RRS and FFRR/L322.
I now bow out as this choice/decision has been discussed many times and the same arguments arise each time.

My 2 pence. As a landrover newby I can say from my view yes they are a pain in the butt and they have lots of niggles but for a luxury barge there really isn’t much in comparison . Be prepared for “preventative maintenance” would be my only piece of advice rather than turning the radio up as it will only end up being more expensive. As a life long Alfa Romeo and classic M BMW owner I can honestly say I think I’m up there with the nutters and gluttens for punishment but I can say that like the other 2 the RR has won a place here with me and considering not having one on the drive is no longer an option. Welcome to the fold if you do dive in
