P38 diesel radiator removal help needed

Need to replace the radiator which has a leak on the top plastic. It's got an integral oil cooler. Can't get to the pipes to undo them - any suggestions? Tried RAVE but can't find the section on radiator removal.

Look under cooling system BMW Diesel engine. Remove hoses from radiator. Remove cowl and viscous fan. Remove oil cooler pipes cover to prevent dirt ingress. Remove two bolts from lower sides of radiator. Lift radiator out. On reassembly fit new O'rings to cooler pipes.

Thanks Wammers - but how do you get to undo the oil pipes going into the rad ? can't get a grip on them coming in from the front!

Reach down and undo them Have you removed the undertray?

Radiator. Why would you remove any oil cooler pipes from engine. Engine oil cooler is in front of rad and does not need touching. If yours is a manual gearbox oil cooler is in bottom of radiator. If it is an auto no oil cooler pipes need touching to remove radiator.

Should be one under the front of car protecting base of rad and lower part of front of engine.

Rad came out easily and slipped new one in. My confusion was the oil cooler which was separate to the rad and stays put.

So your car is an automatic i take it? Without the oil cooler in the rad.

There's no undertray on mine either -2001 DT Auto. Just a fairly crappy sort of a cover underneath the gearbox.

Well there should be obviously it has been removed and not refitted. I have one sat in the garage i removed when i did the cylinder head gasket and timing chains.that i must get round to refitting at some point.

You don't want to know the cost of a new one that's for sure. Give Emmotts a ring 01282 859468 they will have some.

What are they? Plastic? If I could find the mountings I might be able to fabricate something a little tougher to protect my diff etc if off-road.

They don't go anywhere near the diff. Just cover from rad base to under front of sump between chassis legs.
