Broke Down Again!

Driving home last night on the motorway I noticed smoke coming out of the back of my car. There was no loss of power no no change in engine note and no mechanical noises clunks etc.... I was approaching a slip road so slowed down and came off the motorway, as I approached the bottom of the slip road, the engine cut out and I managed to get up onto a grass verge.

On opening the bonnet, I found engine oil sprayed around the front of the engine, all over the pulleys, belts and fan. Not much had made its way on to the side of the engine.

I poked around but couldn't find anywhere that the oil could have come from, as I was in a suit, I wasn't about to get underneath or get too involved. It is clear that the smoke coming from the rear of the car on the motorway wasn't coming through the exhaust, but was spraying on to the exhaust downpipe and creating smoke.

The engine spins over, but won't start, there are no mechanical clunks or grinding noises, it sounds normal for spin over, just not firing.

The RAC sent a flat bed recovery truck out and it was duly dragged on to the back. Where the car had been sat, there was a small pool of oil, but not actually that much. In the pool of oil, there were some metal parts, looking like part of a locking ring that may be in a freewheeling hub (which I know this car doesn't have) or similar, they could also be oil pump parts, it is difficult to say at this stage.

There didn't seem to be enough oil for a catastrophic engine failure, and the metal parts may well have been there when I arrived as there were other bits of rubbish lying around from vehicles that had obviously been there before.

Question: if an oil pipe has broken near the front of the engine causing loss of pressure or level, will the engine sense this and prevent starting.

I am hoping that it is something simple like a burst oil pipe to the oil cooler or similar.

I'll post later when I have had a look, but has anyone had similar symptoms, and what was the cause?
 
if it was engine oil when it got low your oil light would of come on .
Could be turbo oil feed pipe if its exhuast side
 
Update!

So the garage have just had a look at it and the bits of metal did indeed come from my engine.
They came from within the oil pump and made their way through the oil pump casing, the top right hand side to be accurate.
Now, this engine hasn't been in for twelve months and came from a reputable supplier.
In fact I paid extra to have a new oil pump and casing as part of the deal.
It has done about 10,000 miles in the 10 months since fitted by a professional garage and has had two oil changes with filters during that period.
It wouldn't be fair to say who the supplier is at this stage as they are closed today.
I will be telephoning them on monday to resolve the matter hopefully.
They do appear to have a good reputation and this was the reason for choosing them in the first place.
I will let you know what happens.
 
Well, I have just had a very positive response from the engine supplier who will be speaking with my garage on Monday.

it's early days yet, but the quick response from my engine supplier is looking like they didn't get their good reputation for nothing.

Update

My garage have discovered that the reason for the oil pump failure is that a screw has come out of a gear wheel, i'm guessing a locking screw, got in between the timing chain and camshaft sprocket and snapped the chain. This also caused part of the oil pump to come through its casing.
The garage have had excellent responses from the engine supplier who have given them good advice along the way.
Both cylinder heads are on the way back to the supplier to check for valve damage, my garage think they are ok, but they have to be checked thoroughly.
So it is taking longer than expected, but so far the supplier has been excellent.
I'll keep updating as this job progresses.
 
Sorry about the slow updates, the heads went back to the engine supplier and they found that six valves were bent. They have done the required work and the heads are now back at the garage. The garage will be re-building my engine on monday and it should be ready some time this week.
 
The company who supplied the engine are paying for all of the work, have supplied all of the parts and have done the work on the replacement valves in the heads. To date they have been excellent. I only had to write two emails, one to make them aware of the initial problem, one to give them the contact details of the garage who are doing the work. I have been able leave it all to them. I do have to pay for the oil and filter as it is a wear item but I have absolutely no issue with that. The post above is incorrect with Ashcroft Transmissions, it is not them. I will be glad to post the name of the company when all is done and is satisfactory. I am glad that I took the advice of forum members when i chose to buy from this company though!
 
The garage rang today to say that the Range Rover was ready for collection. It's been a while, but they knew I wasn't stuck without it.

I have to say that Turner Engineering have been excellent and are true to their word in every way. It was worth paying the price that I did originally to have one of their engines as they have done all the leg work to resolve my problem. Richard Turner at Turner Engineering contacted me straight away when I had the problem and has dealt with my garage giving advice where required along the way.
It certainly pays to do a little research and find an excellent company who have earned their solid reputation.

Been following with interest. Great to hear its all sorted and to hear of a company that are willing to back up the product they sell with excellent after sales service. I know when the time comes I shall be contacting Turners! Thanks for posting your story, let us know how she runs once you get behind the wheel again!
 
Report back after two weeks of use.

The car is running beautifully, no water loss, no oil usage, just a lovely V8 burble and plenty of power on tap.

I'm very happy with the work that Turners and my local garage did to rectify the fault, can't recommend them highly enough.

Did they say see in in 50k ;);)
