    90 as a daily commuter

I've got an old td90 converted to a 200tdi she's got no soundproofing, gaps in the door tops etc etc... I travel maybe 3/4 miles to work and she warms up in time, never had trouble with the engine, and the parts that have worn out/broken have been my own fault offroading. And my heater works...

looking to buy my 1st defender.. what engine should i get?

200tdi gets my vote! Although a lot of people use the TD5 offroad, the 200 has plenty of torque, and no electronic trickery! I've given mine some real sh*t and she's still going strong. My only complaint is the old stye v-belts for the alternator/water pump/power steering get a bit squeely...

    +5" shocks info on a 90 (pics)

Regarding body clearance, only way you'll solve that if you've already got extended stops would be to start trimming your arches - or get even bigger stops! The blocks will help in a way, as the springs will have to compress further to get the wheel in the same place as without the blocks - but...

    Soft top

I don't have a soft top, but I spent most of the summer roof and door less was wicked fun! My dad has a soft top - and it's colder, but not that bad! Security not an issue for me as I have a garage, and park in a secure carpark at work :)

    twin battery setup

Got a Vit-something battery under my passenger seat, and a big marine grade battery in the back. Hooked up in parallel. Works fine so far, lots of winching etc. Ideally I'd have a split charging system, and maybe two alternators. But I don't have the dollar! :( soon!

    Keeping belts dry.

Glad to hear! Mine where very tight - had to lever the alternator round to get enough slack to get the belt off lol. :P

    Keeping belts dry.

Forgot to say, I have exact same set up. 200 tdi conversion, no cowl, and no viscous fan.

    Keeping belts dry.

Mine was slipping and squeeling like a pig on full lock, and whenever I got very wet. Swapped em for new ones yesterday and no issues, drove in torrential rain this morn. My old ones where pretty perished, and about 4 years old. (Stood for 3 of em!) Have you checked your pulleys for wear...

    A stubborn panhard rod

Haha I find more often than not MOTs pick up on really weird little problems, but not on the rather major issues. But where I live all garages a run by money grabbers, employing kids from college who aren't taught properly. Mate of mine just got his exhaust repaired (he knows little about...

    A stubborn panhard rod

Hahaha!! I'd be checking all the other bolts now, like the radius arms etc, just to be sure! :L

I've put some genuine landrover panhard rod bushes on my birthday list! 😃

Gonna get me some copper slip for the rebuild. :)

Offroading. As soon as they go a little bit it makes a massive (quiet scary) difference to the steering! So I like to swap em over before they get real bad! :)

    A stubborn panhard rod

Yup, well OEM... Which is often misleading... I do lots of offroading, and although I don't hammer it as such, I've managed to chew the bushes up pretty quick. :P I never noticed before - and put all the wobbly steering down to the tyres. Once I replaced the bushes she drove like a dream so now...

    A stubborn panhard rod

Can you not get to the back of the bolt with a hammer and tap it out? I guess that would have been one of you first thoughts, but thought I ought to mention it! You may be able to get a bar in there and tap the end of the bar instead? Mine where tight and required some tapping to get them out...

    Buying a Defender 300tdi

Haha I was lucky when I got mine, she's tatty but chassis is good and mechanical sound. I would have bought any old landy though as I wanted one so bad. You're doing the right thing waiting for a good one! :)

    2008 Defender Bottom door seal

Ahh sorry Chris, that's different to mine! Have a look for door seals online, could always add a little extra rubber if you still have a gap. :)

It is... is... is... I've got myself into the bad habit of replying to OP without reading further down... down... down... :P

    problems with 1995 defender

Hello Henry! How have you diagnosed that it's front wheel drive only? And have you got a picture of the wheel? It could be swivel bearing as mentioned before. Maybe even a completely FUBAR wheel bearing... I'd jack it up, get someone to give the wheel a good wobble while you look for play...
