twin battery setup

It depends on what the plan is.... I run the standard battery from the landrover as my backup battery and a red top optimax as the new main battery. All my additional lights, stereo, cb, torch charger, alarm, interior light and cigarette lighter sockets run directly off the additional battery so I can always start the landy up.

I find the best way is to get a 200amp relay and connect the positive of each battery to one side of the solenoid using a 50amp fuse then ground the solenoid and attach a wire to the switch terminal and take this to a switch powered from the ignition circuit....

Doing that means that when the ignition is off the starter battery is always disconnected from the second battery so you can draw as much juice from the second battery as you like without fear of it not starting. By flicking the switch to off you disconnect the batteries but normally I just leave it in the on position. I've never had a single issue from the moment I fitted it.

If you want a red top optimax (which is just about the best started battery about) then look in the classified section as we have a landyzone special price.

Well it will be for winching and powering the arb compressor
Already have the second alternator fitter 150 amp Ibelive

Ok. The PERFECT solution would be to buy 3 optimax batteries.... 1 red top for starting and 2x yellow tops. Wire the yellow tops together and use them as if they were one battery for the winch etc. You will be able to draw huge amounts and flatten the batteries then still recharge. It's a £300 option but the best. These 3 batteries would fit into the standard defender battery box.

I'm using a pair of Numax batteries (Numax CXV31MF Sealed Leisure Battery 12V 110Ah 1000MCA 500 Cycles XV31MF - Leisure Batteries - Numax Leisure Batteries), higher capacity and cca than optima. I have them linked in parallel normally, but have added solenoids so that at the flick of a switch they change to being linked in series and provide 24 volts to the winch.

Do the above battery's both fit under the passenger seat ? Just wondering on the height of the terminals ?

Thanks

Those numax wouldn't fit for me. Went for optimax blue tops which are combined starter/leisure.

If your winching make sure the relay and wiring between the batts is up to the job. Avg winch can draw 500a at full load.

Got a Vit-something battery under my passenger seat, and a big marine grade battery in the back. Hooked up in parallel.
Works fine so far, lots of winching etc.

Ideally I'd have a split charging system, and maybe two alternators. But I don't have the dollar! :( soon!

Oddessy pc1500's the best you can get.

I welded a plate in the bottom where it (w's ) to create a flat bottom then just drilled through and put in some threaded bar for the securing bar on the top not too bad a job :)

Great job thanks, am looking to do this also and a split charge system.
