£170 just to fit a replacement diff??? WTF??

Just got a quote from an Indy (not gonna say which one just yet) to fit a replacement rear diff to my P38... £170 + VAT!!! Now, I thought it was a relatively straightforward job... Undo rear prop UJ, undo calipers, undo hub carrier bolts, pull half shafts out a bit, undo 10 diff bolts, remove...

Leaving P38 Diesel with no battery for the weekend... Possible effects?

I'm thinking of swiping the P38s 130Ah battery to use in me caravan for the Chippy Run weekend, since the leisure battery in the Pikey wagon is buggered and I can't afford a new one right now :( What possible ill effects might I get from leaving the P38 battery-less for a weekend? I've had the...

It's time to say goodbye to my P38 :-(

After much soul-searching, I've decided it's time to part company with my beloved P38.... :-( Shame really, as I love the damn thing... it's one of the best and most enjoyable vehicles I've ever owned.... but... now that my eldest has started 'big school', I cover a minimum of 60 miles per day...

    Where's this water getting in???

Ok, trying to trace a leak into the back of my Disco whilst I have it in bits... I've noticed water pooling around the back of the o/s rear arch every time it rains heavily, and today I finally found where it was dripping from: It's dripping off the seam (arrowed in the pic) - but there is NO...

Making Disco 1 towbar 'quick release'?

Is it possible to replace the bolts on the 'standard' Disco 1 towbar with some kind of quick-release pins? I want to be able to tow with it, but not have the rigmarole of pulling the bumper off and spending an hour undoing big bolts every time I want to go playing and not have a big plow stuck...

    (Possibly) dumb welding question...

I know you have to disconnect the battery to weld, but I've also seen disconnection of the alternator advocated... Is this needed... Or even just prudent? I've fried a voltage regulator before, in the dim and distant past... But that was 'cos I was stoopid and forgot to disconnect even the...

Making your own HD bumper... thoughts?

I had an idea... I know where I can get hold of some scaffolding poles, and thought I might have a go at fabricating my own HD bumpers... Question is, are they up to the job? I belive they're 2" OD (standard scaffolding size?) and the plan would be to weld 2 together, one on top of the other...

    Dead P38 DSE

My P38 died this morning - engine cut out whilst driving along - no prior faults or warning... It will fire up again if you crank it for about 30-40 seconds, run normally for a few seconds, then die again. When it eventually fires up, there's no clouds of white smoke out the exhaust...

    LZ Rescue... Help!

My P38 has died - I think it's the lift pump, doesn't seem to be much, if any fuel getting through. It dies whilst driving along, and will eventually start again after about 30s of cranking, run for a few seconds, then die again. No clouds of white smoke out the exhaust when it fires up...

    Dickie seats

May be a dumb question... But why do so many people get rid of the dickie seats out of the back of Disco 1s? Mine has had them removed but the mounting brackets are still there, so I will probably throw a set in when I'm all done welding her up, as tbh I find so many situations where having 7...

Me Disco's a wee bit rusty...

Started stripping out the back of my Disco to fit my LPG kit, and found this: Currently wire-wheeling the edges of the boot floor to find the spot welds so I can drill them out. Boot floor's coming out, but the majority of what's on the side panels is superficial surface rust...

LPG kit for Disco 1 - DIY

Just bought a second-hand LPG kit for me Disco 1. It has 2 underslung 40 ltr tank, but I want to put the tanks in the boot as it's me off-road toy... Anybody have experience with doing this? Any advice to offer? I know I need to find a way of venting the tanks externally, just not sure how to...

The distinctive sound of an accessory bearing on the way out...

But which one? http://s1063.photobucket.com/albums/t519/clarky130/?action=view&current=75f7507f.mp4 My money's on the alternator right now. What ISN'T obvious from the video is just how much the tensioner is 'bouncing' - suggesting that one of the pulleys is 'binding' and releasing...

    Sealing up sunroofs

Ok, I've searched and read ad nauseam all the threads I could find about sunroof leaks. Lots of good info and how-tos, etc... My question is - has anybody ever just sealed the damn things shut, with any degree of success? It seems to me that the easiest / quickest way would be to just lift the...

DSP amp replacement with aftermarket - anyone interested?

As well as my lead-wizardry for using aftermarket HUs with H/K systems, I'm now starting to look into a way to replace the DSP amp with an aftermarket one, retaining the stock HU & speakers, for those with broken DSP amps who don't want to shell out £500-odd for a new one (or £300 for an ebay...

Removing Carpets... What to paint floor with?

I'm planning on removing all the carpets from my Disco, since it is only my off-road toy (with occasional road use). I need to do this anyway to thoroughly check the condition of the floor and see where it may need welding... I want to leave the carpets out, since it's inevitable at some stage...
