i had the exact same issue,, not with l.p.g fitted though,, it was a new engine in the end as we couldnt rectify the problem no matter what,, i fitted a coscast lump in the end,, superb,,

if its a diesel a very common problem i have found dealing in p38's is the water pump impellor's fail on the 2.5 bmw engines, they often have plastic impellors that fail over time and break up, normally around 100,000 mls,, replace with a metal impellor type, that might be the suspect i think,,

yeah, dont mess with a v8 rangey, why would you want to put a stinky oil burner in a rangey, the diesel's only really return about 23mpg anyway,, just buy a 2.5 dhse if you want all the toy's and are happy with 0-60 in 2 days!!,
