So what % is caused by mismatched tyres
Good question. We dun't actually know for sure. We don’t have enough evidence of tyre condition after failure.

Many who suffer problems with failed ird and/or rear diff also have possible vcu failure. Or at least a vcu which activates sooner than what we would expect. An active (read as locking up sooner) vcu will put a greater strain on the transmission whilst driving on tarmac. In time this will stress the transmission until something gives. Usually an expensive chunk of metal. Hence why MHM started the vcu fred. Theory being we would test our vcu’s and pool results to see what the general rule is. This hasn’t gone too well so far due to lack of results, but I hope my results post may tempt peeps into having a go and posting their own results.

Now to be fare there’s loads of Freelander owners out there who dun’t know of this problem. It dun’t seem to effect them, and they happily drive there Freelanders without fault. Hard to believe I know. Some will suffer failure and end up on ere only to find out why. So does that mean it only affects certain Freelanders? Are there factors involved which we don’t know realise are key to prolonging the life of a vcu? Yes there are.

I’ve been monitoring my vcu for a while. Done the One Wheel Up Test etc and have also measured the ratio of front to rear drive. I found my results to be different to the 0.8% previously thought, from rave. My thread over ere http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/drive-ratio-198161.html covers what I did and also asks others to do the test and send me the results to compare via PM. We will then put this online to discuss. If I just put up my results anyone can say “yes abc turns is the same as what I get”. I’ve also filmed my marked props to see what they do when driving in a straight line. The result of this is quite interesting. It’s certainly changed my opinion of the whole vcu problem. ;)
