Hi All, what year did the rear number plate change sides on a land rover 88 SWB?
mine is on the right but other land rovers of similar age seem to be on the left?
any thoughts.

My 74 swb 88 is on the right! Whereas Tottots 69 is on the left and his 63 on the right! So there doesn't seem to have been any hard and fast rule at that time?? Kind regards. Chris

The position changed to the left when rear fog warning lights became mandatory. The law only required the light on the offside. I can not remember the exact year though.

Foglight is required on everything registered after 1/4/80.

Our late '80 (V-reg) 88 has the plate on the left and fog light on the right.

really interesting thanks... my back tub i believe is from a late series three, but my landy is a swb 1977.
what about black and white number plates?

Just looking through the James May Specification Guide Book for the Series 3 it states:

"The rear number plate was originally fitted to the tail panel on the drivers side, which meant that LHD models differed. To simplify production all number plates were fitted to the left-hand tail panel, regardless of steering position, from late 1978".

I'll take me anorak off now :)

Anything first reg after 1/1/73 has to have reflective, but B'n'W would have been the exception, rather than the rule, for quite a while before then. Reflectives were introduced in the late '60s.

my s3 is probably one of the last to have the black pressed metal plates with silver lettering then, it was a late 72, always assuming the plates are original and not put on by a po.

they are both riveted on

What registration date can you have the white/yellow plates with raised black plastic letters up until?
