Haldex Transmission - first used in Audi TTs and VW Golf.
The Freelander's 4x4 system has been developed in conjunction with Haldex, whose centre-coupling technology continuously alters the front-rear torque split, normally through a hydraulically operated multi-plate wet clutch. However, Land Rover wanted an electronically controlled centre coupling linking the propshaft to the rear differential that could pre-engage at rest to reduce wheelspin from standing starts, engage quickly when traction loss was detected and disengage quickly without compromising stability control systems.
The Haldex system is far from being perfect too - clever electrickery ages and goes wrong - just like a syrup can with discs in does.

Try googling 'LandRover VCU Transmission System Faults' - 118,000 results in 0.47 seconds.
Try googling only 'Haldex Transmission Faults' and you get 5.6 million results.

does feel of front wheel drive appael to freelander drivers ? whether its true or not im not sure but the lr engineers i saw in the 90s said the bias was because drivers would be used to it ,not engineering wise
when my prop was off i had it in front wheel drive and it handled horribly.
there must be a smidgeon of drive to the rear.....or is it the dragging effect

The press were told mondeo man was the victim, shorry sales targettype person LR wanted to sell to. Traditional vague steering on 4x4's wouldn't appeal. Hence the bias to the front. It is noticeable when you remove the prop that Freelander feel more free. Certainly is on mine. With it being the v6 you only have to feather it and the front wheels squeal with prop removed. With 4x4 you don't get this.
