Just a quick update on my Freelander 1 TD4.

I have decided to remove the VCU as I noted a ‘tightening’ whilst turning into our drive way. Felt like the brakes were being applied so off the VCU came. Driving the car afterwards in 2 wheel/FWD is typical of any FWD drive car and no much less stressful knowing the VCU is ‘off’. A new one shall be sourced there is a place I have noted ‘darn scarf’ which I intend to use but any recommendations would be nice so I have a couple of options. I’m aware that there are some ‘**** heap’ companies out there so caution is the ‘mantra’ on this one.

Anyhoo another small issue is a slight stumble on start up which I suspect may be a leaking injector. There is some smoke and the idle takes 30-40 secs to settle down or less time if the throttle is tweaked a couple of times. Car runs great otherwise. Well pleased!!

Future stuff.. sunroof needs looking at. Not in a rush or buying a new glass but looking at saving/removing the mechanisms that lift the glass.. there is a lot of corrosion on the steel that is bonded to the glass so suspect much of the rest is similar. I can fabricate most things but would like to save most of it all..

Front subframe could do with some TLC. It’s on the cards..

Thermostat has always been reluctant to move but have had it central when leaving the car running/idling and warm air enters the cabin (but not HOT/just warm so maybe thinking a new thermostat is needed. This has been an issue since the day I got the car.. any thoughts on this?

Post MOT issues were a sticking front offside caliper. This has resolved itself but would like to paint these things a conservative colour. I may buy a set of refurbished units and paint them?

Noticed the cigarette lighter holder/charger is a bit intermittent so will be looking at that. I carry a battery jump starter so want that Charging when cutting about.

Finally.. and annoying the three amigos are back again. Fitted new ABS sensors when rebuilding rear and and my diagnostic Toughbook (using Delphi diagnostics) cleared the codes successfully. The three alights came of after my car had been parked over the week I was away at work.. when releasing the handbrake there was abit of a ‘clunk’ as if the drums had gotten stuck and up popped the three amigos…

Anyhoo at hospital at the moment waiting a CT scan on my grey matter as things have gone south regards certain body parts and functions.. it is what it is hoping for a positive outcome so I can go back to work..

Keep fixing stuff, this site and your knowledge and experience(s) worth thousands.. I 5hi7 U Not!

Best

Malcolm

Hope your scan is ok. I've never tried to fix the sunroof on any. of mine. The one time I had a look at it I had to force it back down into position then tape it in place. Since then I've left well alone.

Hi Malcolm, be well I wish you!
Regarding vcu, if you have time you can fix it urself. Perhaps 20-30 pounds cost, few weeks / months time (sooner with more commitment).
I did mine and works ok, maybe a bit loose than original. I posted the saga.

All the best!
Stefan
