so - in the cooler side of the cooling system then?
so if the heads are overheating then it is a distinct possibility that it may not be being picked up be the sensor and/or thermostat both sitting in the return.

Definately needs to be revued.

may need some bits to be machined up tho :( - replacement thermostat housing and new sensor carrier in exit from head.

hmmmm!
needs the thinking hat :D

Wanted!

2nd hand KV6 thermostat housing and pipes - for prospective project ;);):D

doesnt matter if they are ok - or even broken - its for dimensional info and for destroying.

have you found out whethere there is an coolant flow directly from cylinder block (front bank) into thermostat?

not yet dearot. Its a bit difficult to determine coolant flow on the Hippo. Must be some info somewhere. Is it on the Rave disk? Does anyone have a coolant schematic - if so I wud luv a copy?

by the way Dearot - yu have a clone on the MGRover forum - asks similar q's too ;)

so do you :p
i'll say hi to you next time :D

Item 3 ( the thermostat carrier) needs to be replaced, to enable a remote thermostat to be fitted ~( not easy)

Hi Dearot
That item is the Thermostat carrier - it appears to be a sealed unit and connects to the block and to two other pipes by means of a clip-lock system (as far as I can see). When my local garage replaces said items as part of the HGF fix, I am getting these back to investigate further.
I am lead to believe that the Thermostat is on the return from the Radiator to the engine, but from what I can see of Willos pics (thanks) it looks like it is in the "hot" section. Further investigation is needed, but I dont like a system in which the cooling water needs to cool the block, engine oil, gearbox oil and the IRD, or inversely the Engine oil, Gearbox oil and IRD are all putting heat into the cooling system!

methinks this aint gonna be easy, but that why we got brains.

If it is a sealed unit then thermostat reading cool temp from rad. If you see closely that is in the "cold" section. thus you need remote thermostat.
But if it is the case, I was just wonder why LR havent done any Recall??

all such cooler mods like 2nd electrical water pump, extra engine & trans oil cooler is a must.

It certainly seems like it.
Possibly secondary cooling system for gearbox, engine oil and IRD, so engine cooling system only cools engine?

there MUST be a better system?

yes it does only cool the engine. i got one from ebay. waiting to arrive. i will let you know the outcome.

dont understand - i woz suggesting having two cooling systems - one for engine and one for the other bits. What have yu got from E-Bay?

at the moment the Hippo system cools all at once (or not)

Looks very similar to the one fitted on my old V6 Calibra.

Is their space for a second remote radiator located somewhere? Then you could have 1 for engine and 1 for ancillaries. The ancillaries 1 could be fitted with an electric water pump.

good idea treev, that'l mean two lecky pumps to be safe.

looking at the circulation drawing - looks like there is a good spot in the pipe run between the Engine Oil cooler and the Transmission Fluid Cooler for a radiator and poss elec pump

Another good point is to perhaps try a bonnet vent to help draw more air in to the rear V located near the bulk head.

Also a lower temp thermostat would help this little outfit. Perhaps one that opened at around 72c - 75c.

These are all standard fit items used by other manufacturers in V6 applications in road cars. The KV6 is a road car engine anyway.
