Hi. Just bought my second 300tdi disco 1. All good apart from a quite severe vibration when I get to about 60 mph. Not at slow speeds, just at about 60. Much more pronounced when I ease off the power to sit at 60. Isn't coming through the steering, seems transmission related. I've checked the prop shaft, the rubber joint at the rear is fine, but there is a lot of sideways and up and down play in the rear diff front bearing, it's also leaking oil. Would that be the cause ? Or any ideas where to look ?
Thanks.

my disco did this for the 5 years i had it. seemed to be front prop related as it got better when i fitted the clutch but returned. eventually the front prop uj gave up. started shaking like a sh****g dog again soon after. never cured it fully, so good luck.

Could be ...

As it's a new vehicle, to you, I'd also check all the suspension and steering bushes, especially the A-frame.

It definitely sounds prop/diff related - this is how I would approach it:

1. Remove doughnut from rear diff and check for movement on input bearing - if there's any play it needs replacing straight away before any further wear/damage is done;

2. Check the condition of the rubber doughnut by trying to bend it, if you see any cracks in the rubber, it's goosed so needs replacing.

3. Check the front U/j on the rear prop for ANY wear, if in doubt replace it.

I would do that lot then test drive. The parts are cheap so that's good news.

Good luck

Dave

Hi,
Thanks for your help so far.
There is quite a bit of play in the input bearing. Is this bearing easy to replace, or is the best answer a replacement diff ? Is this likely to be causing this vibration ?
Thanks

What you could do is take off the rear prop completely, select Centre Diff Lock and, driving carefully and smoothly, get up to 60mph and see if the bad vibes are still there.

If they've gone, you know where the trouble lies.

Could be wheel balancing. I had this problem on an old range rover. Fine at low speeds but had a massive vibration above 60mph it was because it had no spigot rings.
