TD5 110 rumbling noises

Hi All
I have a rumbling noise from the front. I've had previous problems with the fitted double carden front prop and thought it was that about to go again. I already had a spare in anticipation! I took off the front prop and went for a drive (with diff lock engaged) and the noise disappeared. Good result thought I and fitted the new prop - wrong, the noise was back. Anybody any ideas where the rumble is coming from?? Front crown & pinion going quiet when not under load? Gearbox? The noise seems worse under acceleration and doesn't get any worse at speed and doesn't seem speed related which is strange.

Im having the same problem as you. Rumbling noise under acceleration and increased momentaraly when suspension under load ( going over uneven surfaces) Again, as you did, i removed front prop and noise went. I first changed the uj's on the prop but the noise remained. I have just fitted a new prop to eliminate that and the noise is still there. All I can point to now is the diff. No money to change that so let me know how you get on.

Surely someone out there knows an answer or at least an educated guest???????????

Too late - a day over Salisbury Plain was too much and the diff gave out - the noise was the final throes of it breaking up.
