Hi All,

Here is a thread for my first ever Land Rover. A 1994 Discovery V8 121k on the clock. Bought on a whim, unseen, on eBay for £500.

How it looked when I brought it home a couple of weeks ago:

Stripped all the stickers off, washed the moss and lichens off (bad idea, it leaks now!) and stripped the back out to see how rusty it was:

Not as bad as I was expecting, for £500, but still a bit to do. I can sort of weld, and my dad does it for a living, so should be OK. Other bad bits include sill and front inner arches, and a bit on the rear arches.

More of a concern was the rattle from the engine:

After a lot of poking around though, I think it is the right cat.

So my list of jobs now is:

Oil change, plugs leads, etc.
Try and get rear bumper off to see what is under there.
Chop out boot floor and replace with Aluminium plate.
Fix body mounts, arches sill etc.
Ali plate around bottom of doors and arch extensions to cover cruddy outer wings etc.
New rear springs. I think it has been used for a recovery truck and towing a lot. The back end is sat on its arse!
Steel wheels and 31s.
Chop cats out and weld in straight pipes to see if that cures the rattle.

Not much really!

It's a lot of car for the money, but not as bad as it could have been.

Check the joint between the Y-pipe and middle silencer, mine rattles even though it is tight. Also the heat shields on the Cat's if you have them.

Boot floor panels are cheap enough, do it properly!

It's Mr Noisy's fault! I want my boot to look like this:

Plus it will be a much easier and quicker repair (and cheaper) to cut out the floor and the lip it sits on, build up the cross members flush and rivet the ali on top.

once you get going you will probably find more, but on the up it's a disco so is off the ground a little so not as much crawling about, i did one 6 years ago, enjoyed it, take plenty of picks, plenty of seam sealer/primer and mostly waxoyl the lot!

Nice buy for £500! yep theres things to do but best bit about Landys is the fact they are doable!
Good luck, keep up the pics on the thread :) :)

Hi Paul, I live near enough in Gawthorpe, right behind the mad mile.

After three weeks, my shed is full of removed landy bits and there are nine extra wheels and a set of springs in my garden!

New boots to fit after the springs this weekend, if my wheel nuts turn up:

look forward to seeing the finished project driving around, i m from dewsbury. If your dad cant get you metal for patching try A & G Welding Fabrications down grange rd.They always seem to have a well stocked off cut bin they will part with for a few beer tokens.

theres also a place at bottom of healy road that do mainly sheet steel, , and a place going down towards batley peter hope that gets pretty much anything ;)

I've got a few sheets of galv and normal mild 1mm and 1.5mm in the shed. Plus loads of other bits of box, angle etc. We use peter hope at work so can 'acquire' steel that way also!

I grew up in Ossett, used to live on Healey Rd (no 57 IIRC), many a memory of being bollocked for playing in the train yard

Does the Calder still stink?

damn you I need a deal like that, hes getting a visit soon cos I need some more box and angle to redo my boot floor lol

It's always my fault...

Good luck with it!

See you've got a 200 body (nice) with a 3.9? Can't tell from here if it's a serp belt motor, guessing it'll have 24 spline axles on it.

If you ditch the cats you may wish to change the tune resistor also and ditch the lambdas, but you'll have to have a special mot then to get it though on a non cat test somehow :behindsofa:

Either way, congrats, you'll love it :D
