Hi folks,

Just a quick one. Since buying my P38 I've been having to use the EKA code to access the vehicle (the original owner butchered the circuit board somehow whilst attempting to replace the fob battery). The fear of being locked out and embarrassment of looking like I'm trying to jimmy the lock to steal a car in the supermarket car park led me to order new keys from my local LR main dealer.

Problem is this. It has been 2 months since I ordered the keys and they still haven't arrived with the dealer. I've opened a case with Land Rover customer services to try and find out what's going on with these keys but they are rather hush hush and call me weekly to say there's no update available.

My suspicion is that there's some sort of issue with a part supplier (other forum posts from 2010 would lead me to believe this has been the case before). I'd be interested to hear if anyone else on here has had similar issues. Not particularly bothered about the money, but one would expect to receive a part like that after 10-14 business days and not 2 months.

Cheers in advance,
Sandy.

(attached for posterity is a picture of my currently knackered key).

I believe the keys are made to order from a company called Huff in Germany (I thinks its German anyway)....so they could be a while, but as you say, you'd expect a quicker turn around.

Maybe there is supply issues with Huff, or Brexit has caused a row with Ze Germans.....keep on at them and consider getting your local trading standards office involved.

I got new keys last year 1st one didn't work 2nd one was the same as my working key so knocked it out 3rd one perfect dealer gave me the 2nd key complimentary all within a 2 week period, I think its your dealer messing you about not a supply problem

I bought 3 new keys last year (one for each of my project RR's as some little S*&t broke into the workshop and nicked the others, and a spare for my own P38), and had about a 10 week wait - because it was over Christmas, and then there was a problem with the machine that programmed the keys, so some of the orders were being sent to the USA to be programmed and then sent back... Or so I was told...

It was something of a ridiculous wait time, but they did arrive in the end, and all worked first time - which was nice!

About this time last year they worked out to being about £174 each including VAT from memory.. I'm not sure what they are now though!

Mine was £160 all in a few years ago. that was from Stratstone. Ordered it Friday afternoon and picked it up Monday morning. I believe if the guy in Germany is on leave you have to wait for him to get back off holiday. When is the Easter break for kids in Germany?

It's funny you should say that, the parts guy at my dealer mentioned that they were shipping the keys across to the States for a while last year but believed that they're now back to being done in the UK (or wherever they're normally done).

I got a slight discount aswell, as I was ordering 3 of them in one go - but can't remember what the combined price was - I know they said it was about £174 each before any discount - but then anything off is always nice!

My dealer also said that they were now processing them again in Europe (usually done in Germany I think as the keys come from Huf) but this was as I was picking mine up after the long wait! Luckily I wasn't in a rush as I had one good key for my RR, and the others were for project restoration P38's so no rush on them either!

Update.

Got a call from Land Rover Customer Relations today to advise that the key has arrived at the dealership at long last.

Took a quick drive round to pick up the key and all seems to be well. My car is a 2001 MY and seems to have easy sync so it was a breeze to get the key talking to the vehicle. At present the key is a little tight in the ignition barrel but hopefully a little use and perhaps some appropriate lubricant will remedy that.

Cheers Again,
Sandy.

The key will wear itself into the ignition barrel as it gets used.. My brand new key was the same, but after a couple of weeks all the (presumably) square edges of the cut profile on the blade have rounded off a bit and it is now easier to get in an out!

Graphite powder for lube, yes - I usually use some MAF/Injector cleaner with one of the long straws to blast down inside the barrel first to clean all the crud out (as they don't leave residue behind like WD-40 does) and then once it's dried, some graphite powder.

Thanks very much guys, I followed your advice and used a little graphite powder which worked a treat. Though this was not before I managed to slice my finger open with the new key (I guess thats why they call it a key "blade").

Next problem on the list is the RF receiver. I'm struggling to get the car to lock and unlock from much more than a metre or two away from the filler cap. Had a little look at the receiver this evening and it would appear that Wes is fitted with the "interim" receiver. So whilst I don't have the battery drain issues of so many others, I think it's maybe not in good health.

I hear that Land Rover are charging about £150 for the newest RF receiver? Which seems a bit steep for such a tiny little box...

Cheers again!

Sandy
