right went to go out this morning in my 90 and the hand brake is stuck fast tried the usual hitting hit, rocking it drive slowly back and fourth to no avail even removed the prop and tried to get the drum off to clean but as you all know this will not come off while the brake is engaged i know this is a common prob an usually a good thump will free it but not today so after any ideas as i use this thing for work and its loosing me money as we speak

all help as always is greatly appreciated

reet - crawlin underneaf in yo bestest works suit - it is on the rear of the handbrake drum on the nearside - thats behind the drum and close to the transfer box filler plug - it is a square head and brake spanners do fit - cant remember the size tho - yu need to move the adjuster anti-clockwise looking to the rear. - also make sure that the linkage on the other side is well greased and fully releases.

whilst yo there - make sure a lickle hole underneath the section between the transfer box and brake drum is open - its at the bottom of the joining section - this allows oil slung out of the rear of the transfer box to leak away and not immerse yo hand brake shoes in gearbox oil.

nope it dont come out as it has a big pointed section on the inside - this is squared orf and as yu turn it - it shud click, click every 1/4 turn until it bottoms I reckon yu shud get at least a turn or two anticlockwise - possibly only one click clockwise.

its seems like it or the spanner will snap i know this is a dumb question but am i right to do this with the hand brake handle down inside the cab

this mite help - its orf a series - but i think its similar.

always do any adjustment with the handbrake orf.

think thats the same as a def. when you undo it, it will go through a series of tight and slack spots, just keep backing it off. dont worry about snapping the spanner... what else you gonna do?!

just make sure yu turn it anti clockwise - thats from bottom to top. yu can see the squared orf end on item 23 above - thats wot yu is turnig from the back.

Yes, brake OFF in the cab.

If the propshaft is still OFF make an attempt to whack the drum with a mallet (4x4 fence post end on)

The adjuster is a half-inch square I think and can take a heap of torque to move. Use WD40 or Plus Gas and work it left and right hundreds of times to break the rust that's sticking it.

You need to turn it in quarter-turns at a time, and each quarter will "jump" with a clonk. You are turning it OUTWARDS, anti-clockwise, and as MHM says you'll need about two full turns to get it loose.

You will see a small rod that is pulled out when the brake lever is lifted.
Try to bash it back INTO the brake when the lever is DOWN / OFF. You may get lucky and that being a bit stuck OUT may be the problem. Be fairly gentle with that - don't mash it to pulp with a bloody big hammer!

The minute you get the bugger freed off, arrange to have it serviced / cleaned and greased.

right cheers for all your help peeps the adjuster would not budge so in the end took it for a spin round the block got it red hot then soaked it in cold water a hit it loads as you can imagine it freed up went straight to my mates garage stripped it down cleaned it all then covered every servicable part in copper grease so it should be good but at least i learnt now im gonna service the bugger everytime after i go off road once again thanks lads
