I've just taken my special tracks off my disco, and put the road tyres back on but it still sounds like a bloody spitfire going down the road. It's making a lot of noise under load and a bit whilst engine braking but is nigh on silent whilst coasting (ie little bit of throttle to keep it from slowing down but not enough to put it under load.) It seems to be coming from the front axle rather than the gearbox. It has had new wheel bearings last weekend and all 4 are silent still.
I was thinking it was the diff pinion bearing causing it, as under load the cut of the gear would put it under more pressure does that sound right? I have play in one of the swivel housings so was gonna drop another axle in so I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone!
Or is there something I have overlooked?

pinion bearings would normally be noisier on over run rather than power ,diff carrier bearings on power, though strange things happen and its worth looking at front t/box out put bearing

Just had a look at it, there's play in the transfer box output, and with no front prop it's still whining.
Guess that's that for the transfer box bearings then!

Mine produced a god awful whine (also only when under load) which seemingly came from the front of the transmission.
Turned out to be the alternator pulley bearing.

Just a thought...
