Hi 👋
I’m back with another frustrating d1 issue
Its manual with egr removed no air con

Car drives fine most of the time no noise

Problem is that in higher gears 3-4 at lower rpm - 2-3k under load up hill there is a loud metallic rattling vibration noise. Coming from the front end somewhere. Does not make it when stationary so it being a bit of a pain to find. The noise stops immediately if I shift down for higher rpm.

I have swapped props, have checked the axles /hubs and suspension all been apart but can’t seem to find anything loose or any signs of wear where anything has been rattling or rubbing. It’s not the exhaust or the engine mounts. Kinda pulling my hair out.

Does anyone know any tricks to find a rattle?

I have just recently solved this exact same issue

But the use of "stupid" and "D1" in the same sentence precludes me from sharing this sought after information

an appropriate picture of you being flogged with a steel winch cable or some other suitable punishment might jog my memory

as an aside to another Landy thread - the i before e rule is a lot of codswallop

Is it just a rattle? Brake shield, heat shield on the exhaust, even an object in the glove box?
Many things can rattle, sometimes at varying loads or in different parts of the rev range.
It isn't necessarily an important mechanical part, although it could be.
If it is, it will probably get worse in short order, so will be easier to diagnose.

Both the words "stupid" and "D1" are simply adjectival, and both describing the noise. So I doubt that the OP really thinks his D1 is stupid.
As for "i" before "e". the rule in full is "i before e, except after c, WHEN THE SOUND IS "EE" " Few seem to know this but if they do the rule works very well.
And knowing the solution to a member's problem, but refusing to tell him, is childish in the extreme. So feck off out of the Forum you tw@t.

When under load the exhaust might be touching something as it sits quite close to everything on the front end, possibly
where the cross member is. Engine & gearbox mounts ok. ??

I would love to hear what It was on yours.
I did not mean that the d1 is stupid, I love my d1. I sold 2x l322s td6 and 3.6 tdv8 and kept the d1. That says something ;)

Thanks for your reply, Yes it’s just a rattle, no other symptoms the car is driving just fine no stuttering smoke etc
