Discovery TD5 engine oil

Hi all does anyone know if 5w30 oil is ok in the td5 engins on a disco? Haynes manual says 5w40 or 5w50 but I have a td5 defender as well which uses 5w30, along with transit, focus, Astra vans etc so I have whole drums of 5w30.

Seeing as it's thinner than 5w40, I would have thought it would be ok - can anyone confirm?

5w30 is fine and spec for td5

Many thanks I thought it was as that's what I use in defender, but this is a 10P engine and disco is 15P so wondered if they were slightly different.

5w30 fully synthetic Asda oil in mine!

The 40 is for the higher end of the engine range so if you are towing alot or high speed or heavy off roading it will give you better protection, O and I miss out driving across the desert ! :rofl:

5w-30 is good for TD5 up to ambient temps of, on average 30°c.

5w-40 is good for TD5 up to ambient temps of, on average 40°c +


What do you imagine is the average ambient temp in the UK during summer?

there is other thing which is mostly neglected, not just the oil thickness/viscosity is important... there are specially engineered oils for EUI(electronic unit injector) equipped engines(as the Td5), using the dedicated stuff would prolonge the engine's life

Hi Fery, I've not come across that before, can you give me an example?

The injectors themselves are obviously lubricated by the diesel fuel, so where does the engine oil aspect come into play? It's certainly not specified by LR.

hi Dave, for example(scroll down to the description) COMMA DIESEL PD 5W40 FULLY SYNTHETIC 5 LITRE OIL | eBay the Td5 is also this kind of PD engine, these oils have a lower electrical conductivity than 'ordinary' oils as the injector solenoids and the loom are in the oil

How important is the ACEA number?

The Haynes manual says to use ACEA A1 or A2; I have never even looked at these before but notice that the oil we use is 5w30 - API CH-4, MACK T-9, ACEA E4, VOLVO VDS-2, MB228.5, SCANIA LDF, MAN M3277, MTU TYPE 3, MACK EO-L.

answered my own question :'D haha ...... "10w40 is thicker than 5w40, ONLY when cold. At operating temperature it is exactly the same. Multi-viscosity oils with a lower W number are specifically designed to flow better, and thus lubricate better, at very low temperatures. There is no need to use a 5w-40 if the vehicle only requires 10w-40."

just thought this little bit of info was good for anyone like me who is a complete baby when it comes to car knowledge.
Q- whats best 10w40 or 5w40
A- "10w40 is a slightly thicker (viscosity) oil than 5w40, a lower viscosity oil protectsbetter from cold, it's also recommended for new engines with very tight tolerances, but pour it into an older engine and the piston rings will struggle to keep it out of the combustion chamber and you'll burn oil."

I hope you don't think that those two engines are the same.... did you ever hear how a PD/EUI engine is built and working? ... i think not as long as you compare it with a 300Tdi ... there are special oils for PD engines if you want the best.. if you just want to have oil in it to not be stressed that the engine is not lubricated then yes... put what ever sh*t you want or go back untill post #7, read carefully again maybe you'll understand and gain some thoughtfulness to not recommend unproper oils to others
