Discovery 2 transfer box oil leak

If anyone can help on this one, My Discovery 2 has an oil leak from the back of the transfer box, I am going to be on my back under it fixing this and just wondered if its straight forward, from what i can see i need to take the prop shaft off, the hand brake drum, there must be a flange in there to undo and pull off but do i need to take the hand brake shoes and backing plate to be able to do that - cant see anything in the haynes manual about this - looks a simple job on the face of it - but its a land rover so it will be fraught with difficulty, 35 years ago i would just get on with it but at 66 and a recent back decompression operation under my belt im more cautious than i used to be! The lads next door at the garage are not that keen on the thought of the job!

the hand brake back plate with the shoes and everything on it, still attached to the handbrake cable comes off over the propshaft flange. 4 bolts hold it on. You wouldnt need it off to do the seal.

Google speedi sleeve, saves having to do the seal again in the near future.

not that difficult I did mine at 70, but get a genuine oil seal I used the mud seal to push it in square, you need to put a 5mm packer between the flange and the mud seal, then I ground down the old nut to remove the nylock,which I then used to push in the seal, it work as not had aleak in 2 years, I think you may get away with just using the mud seal and bit of tube as the seal goes all the way in untill it stops

Job done! it was not the oil seal at all that was leaking but from the nut, im told now that these nuts regularly come loose and the felt pad behind its washer is all thats then keeping the oil in, the four prop shaft to hand brake drum bolts & nuts needed replacing, some oil on the hand brake shoes but brake cleaner solved that, one day it can be treated to new shoes but not a job to easily do on your back as you cant get to the top springs
