Loss of 4 wheel drive

Hi all,

I am hoping someone will be able to help me.
I have a discovery 2 td5 (15p) landmark 2004 reg manual. No diff lock, just high and low range

I went through a river quite recently (no snorkel), the water came up to where the windshield wipers sit, and i have a 2inch lift along with some 32inch insa turbos.
My ECU got completely submerged along with the air intake. i was towed out, took the filter out and turned her over, she started up just fine.
Then drove 40 mins home without any problems.
The next day i was nipping to Tescos (15min drive), about half way there, a load of lights came up on the dash and i lost all power. i was able to start up and get home, but the whole way home it kept cutting out. I then dried the ECU out, and that issue soon vanished. However, I have the TC, Hill descent, ABS and hand break dash lights on. I now dont have any rear wheel drive? it seems very odd to me, and i'm wondering if anyone else has experinced something similar and would be able to guide me?

So for starters as you don't mention any unusual noises like a damaged half shaft then your vehicles rear prop shaft is missing

i wish it was that. but no. rear propshaft is still there

Dude you need to dry that entire vehicle out properly

I'd also be draining all the oils - engine, diffs, gearbox, trans box

Cant see anything electrical causing loss of rear drive, someone else will know for sure

Did it have the wading plug fitted in the bellhousing before you took it for a swim?

You're very erm...brave taking it that deep without a snorkel and I'm guessing you don't have extended breathers as well?

I see some people relocate the ecu to the dash top or under the steering wheel if they're doing a lot of wading

@bankz5152 does a lot of off roading and runs well prepped trucks, he might have an insight

Rear diff completely stripped? Like you say tho would cause some horrendous noises surely

Yeah, wading plug is fitted. No extended breathers. Yeah I was considering that. But just didn’t get round to doing it before I found the river ahaha. I’ve taken all of the carpet it out and dried all the electrics. However, I haven’t changed any of the oils regarding diff etc. thank you very much. I will do this. I appreciate the help

Might be worth getting a dehumidifier in there if you aint already. You'll prob get gremlins for a while after this

I wouldn’t know how to check that. I have never opened up a diff. The closest I have got to something like that is replacing my offside half shaft along with CV joint. But yeah there are no noises at all. Thank you

Unfortunately not. But tomorrow I’m going to put it on some wooden blocks and have a look

How have you determined you have no rear drive???

Without a difflock, that would normally mean NO drive... the output to the rear would just spin and the centre diff wouldn't transfer power to the front anyway.

Wonder if the bellhousing is full of shìt and clutch is slipping?

OP did you take wading plug out afterwards?

I would also look at this. We had a Defender come on a trip with us once and the same sort of thing happened, it was the clutch.
As for the dash lights, you got it wet and buggered something up somewhere. Fuse box, ecu, abs unit, bcu maybe.

Snapped half shaft?
Wouldn't necessarily make an awful noise.
But it would put the three amigos on.
I'd put the hand brake on and jack up each rear wheel in turn. if one or both turn then start taking half shafts out.
I had a mate who snapped half-shafts so regularly on his truck, admittedly a Series, he always carried spares, one of each length.

Just from what i can gather, i went to a lane today thats quite agressive. (I have been too before and manged it great no struggle), as i went today i had the front wheels up in the air (they were spinning) and the back wheels werent moving at all, and i then couldnt get out, so i had to reverse out and go round.

So i am assuming i have lost both back wheels. Thank you

That doesn't mean you had no drive to the back wheels, as has been said by @AllanWorms with no centre difflock, in that scenario, the rear wheels wouldn't budge and the front wheels would just spin. Once you got onto solid ground the traction control should brake the spinning wheels and allow drive to the other wheels. That is what it is for!
If you had your front wheels spinning and then you were still able to reverse your truck out and "go round" you do have drive to at least some wheels. And if the fronts were spinning why do you think the back ones weren't working and somehow the fronts drove you out of the situation. Or were you going up a hill?
