I am thinking down those line too for mine.. I only have 205's on mine, but the weight on the back door is huge.. You seen any pics of wheels on disco bonnets..?

No I haven't, so I thought I would be the first! I will take some photos and post them up in the next day or so.

I do know that there a lot of guys who will slag me off for it saying that the wheels are too heavy to lift the bonnet, (wimps), or that you won't be able to see over it, (short arses) but hey I'm tall and strong lol.

Seriously I think it might be good plus I have a few ideas growing around the wheel mount etc.

Certainly worth looking into.. I might put a spare wheel on me bonnet tomorrow n get a pic to see what it looks like.

Awesome. Don't think i've ever seen a bonnet mounted spare on a disco. Looks cool on a defender as there quite angular, (in my opinion) could mess up the decent lines the front of the disco already has, might look a bit 'stuck on' as the bonnet curves downwards. Going to have to google it now!!

Worth a try Ian, but you will lose a lot of visibility I think, plus it will be bastard awkward when lifting the bonnet, I wonder how the bonnet stay will manage?!

Anyway, no way to find out without finding out! :)

A quick search brought this up

Would be intrigued to see how much visibility is lost as my rear door has seen better days haha.

It would look better with chunky tyres.

No law against it as long as the driver has clear visibility through the windscreen. I have had my spare on the bonnet and as long as you mount it towards the back, it looks ok from the seat.

I will try my 33" on tomorrow. Lets have a laugh.....

Remember of course not all things have to "look" right because often function is required before form on an off road vehicle, however in a strange way often on these type of vehicles they can look very right even though they look so wrong because of how functional the design is.

By rights a defender should be a eyesore but it just works every time! :)

Defender has the extra height to windscreen of the bulkhead vents though and is a more sat up seating position, closer to the front, so you lose much less visibility.

Sat my spare on the bonnet once, just to keep it out the way, sat in the front seat to look, and to be honest felt there was far too much obstruction for driving, especially in town, but didn't take it any further .. and that's with only 31" tyres!

I tried sticking my spare (265/70/16) on the bonnet and I thought it looked ****e and it got in the way. Love it on a defender and if my finances ever stretch to allow me one, thats where the spare would live. As it is, im thinking of keeping my roof rack on permenant and mounting the spare up there.

Ooh, I wouldn't put it on a roofrack either! Mind that's 'cos I wouldn't have a roofrack .. too much weight too high up.

Must admit, when I can, I'll remove the rear seats and put the spare inside, laid and strapped down, like MrNoisys.

Been thinking about simply not bothering .. me spare, as it is, is a completely different size to the other tyres and I carry a couple of cans of Tyre Weld anyhow!!

It would be an interesting look but the vehicle would be very front end heavy. Besides the fuel tank there's not much weight over the rear axle compared with the front if the spare was to go on the front. Probably a stupid thought but wonder if it would affect traction...

As ever .. it depends ..

A lot of traction comes not just from actual axle weight, but also from weight transfer, so as long as the back end pivots over the back axle there should still be plenty weight to give decent traction .. might be different going downhill mind .. ;)

Going uphill its normally the front end that fights for grip first.

This was all meant as a laugh you know........but I do have some daft ideas.........

Currently the spare, (yes I have one now, although slightly differ size) lives in the boot and lays flat.

AND THIS IS WHY I KEEP SAYING THAT THIS IDEA IS SILLY FFS!

I suppose I could reshape the bonnet to steal the space underneath it and inset the tyre, that might work.
