he has a proper mandrel bender but the largest die he has for it is 38mm he's also got a load of 38mm cds I could use for a bargain price!! but think it would look a bit thin/small, but now having said that its all about protection and looks are unimportant really, so looks like I might be going that way!

What wall thickness are you going for?

3.6mm I think it was so will be more than up to the job

I think 38mm will be fine. Very THK so should be strong enough. I think we should plan next weekend and I will come and help.

I could make a bull bar as well as I have now run out of spare indicators lol

I'm aiming for next weekend mate just got to see if me mate is free and happy to do the bending then load it in the car and weld it up back at home!

Anyhow today I replaced the wheel bearings on the nearside front wheel. Last night the snow started and this morning I was faced with a few inches and it was still falling.

Anyhow I grabbed the bearings from my local motor factors and then put them on. What I want to do is share a great tip for when you are putting in the new bearing races.

I cut a slot in the old ones so I could hammer the new ones in evenly. Here are a couple of photos.

Can't believe i have finally caught up to the the most recent post of this thread, i have been reading this thread bit by bit where possible for near on a week.. loved every minute of it!!

I have always had a soft spot (and it seems they have many too) for discos so a year ago picked myself up a late 300tdi without going into too much detail she (named Lady in White - Lady for short) will be following all operations, medications and kicks up the arse The Hornet has already undertaken! (Inner wings already done, will post pics soon) .

You and noisey, matt, mark and all other regular posters here have given me a hudge amount of encouragement to get it sorted! Sharing your pashion for detail and crave for perfection I now have the knowledge im not the only one like this and wont feel so bad to share what comes from it and see that i could have some fun doing it!

To sum things up.. You have a cracking disco their bud!! keep up the amazing work!

Using an old race with a slot cut out of it works really well. There are a couple in my tool chest for exactly this purpose.

Your garage looks just like mine does !!

My garage has its advantages. It's quite roomy. This picture was taken after decorating. I had some issues with light so thought I would try everything white. The photo was taken just after I finished the wheel bearings lol

Certainly has good ventilation, but not sure about the white flooring being very practical :der:

Well the stains seem to disappear easily!!

Mine's modelled along similar lines, but with a tad less room. Be careful though, the white soon goes a bit grey when it hadn't had enough layers built up.

Can you explain a bit more about the slot Hornet. Is it perfectly ok to do this..? I have not touched my bearings yet, but one day I will. Fore warned n all that..

You use an old bearing race. Cut the slot in it so it will reduce in size as you drive in the new race. Once the new race is seated, you can then pull out the old race easily

Are you getting through many bearings..?

In fairness the Hornet has done 2000 miles mostly off road and I have put in new wheel bearings in the front once. Offside was done in July last year and obviously this one yesterday.

However I stand by the fact that you should regrease as soon as you can after wading. The nearside bearing was actually OK, no wear but all the grease had washed out.

This evening I can back and saw my daughters boyfriend had ****ed on the snow at the front. It was a nice message of love and affection which I could have forgiven him for..........until the wife noticed it was her handwriting

read this fred 3 times now and always find summat that i missed before..

where did the rear bumper pics go... as its my next project after the sills and sliders...

by the way, fantastic read, i was considering scrapping mine until i read this, so cheers mate...as for the garage, i have about 10" one side and less than 2 foot the other..! and covered in the same paint!!!
