Hi just wondering if anyone can shed any light on a problem that started today on my Defender 110,It is a bit of a Hybrid and has a R380 gearbox. It has started to vibrate but only under load and stops it i dip the clutch or free roll.I have checked all the obvious thing, wheel bearing, prop shaft UJ joint and gearbox mounts but all seem fine.

any ideas to cheack would be grateful.

many thanks simon

They are HD spring with twin shocks as its got a 6.2 GMC lump to carry, Its been running great for the last 3-4 months since finishing some work but yesterday this vibration started.Thought it was the UJ's but are all tight, wheel bearing all ok, all mounts ok and its only under load and gets worse the more load you put on it.Dip the clutch and all is fine, all props are tight but the front one you can turn backwards and forwards nearly 1/4 of a turn seems a lot of play ??

if you have a lift kit-I'd guess it is transfer box output bearings if prop joints are okay

drop the prop and grab the output shaft flange if it is sloppy as you'll soon see

Its only the front prop that has play in it and the back is fine why would this be ?
ffs.

You are checking it with the handbrake on!

Chock the wheels, take the handbrake off and check it - it will play and i bet you a fiver that the rear prop UJ's are knackered as well (hence your vibration)!

Of course there won't be any play in anything if there's a brake on it strong enough to stop your landy rolling down a hill (esp with a GMC6.2 in it!!!)

Yes you are correct well half correct so ill keep the fiver !!!

I had the handbrake on when i was checking it the other, night when i looked in day light and had the hand brake off its the UJ at the gearbox end of the front prop.Just picked some new ones up from MM 4X4 so will fit it tomorrow along with some other goodies i had to have !!!
