Anyone tow a caravan with a series?

My 2.25 diesel is not the quickest of motors, and i'm thinking of getting a van, and wondered how stupid an idea this would be.

Good luck! they have a 2000kg braked limit and will tow that but i suspect on the road it would be bordering on unsafe.
My old boat weighed 1000kg and a lwb petrol needed to stay in 1st gear to get up my road; my mondeo doesnt brake a sweat doing 3rd gear!
so give it a test first i would say!

towed a caravan all the way to near the spanish border south coast of france ,admittedly down to 30mph in strong winds

Just out of interest. When towing heavy trailers or caravans do you stay in 2wd or run in 4wd? Just thinking of the drive shaft strength on the swb's

Done that with a 109 petrol - no problem whatsoever hauling campers up to 750 Kg. Could have hauled more but the one I own is the one I own. :) I do think having said it that the 2.25D is likely underpowered for the job - the petrol engine did fine with it but I think the leisurely pace of a 2.25D might be an irritant to other drivers.

Did a trip from Boston to Halifax, Nova Scotia and back at motorway speeds and did it with no worries whatsoever on the vehicle front.

I will say I think I prefer a long wheelbase vehicle for towing - less likely to get steered by your trailer if the weight balance is off.

My 1954 standard 2 litre petrol Series pulled a 32' caravan all over the country when I was working away, and even did a full home removal from Halifax to the north of Scotland.

She never missed a beat!

Great stuff

Looks like the petrol engine is a better option

I'd say look at the ACR tuned head and cam combination. It adds a very useful amount of torque low down as well as power which lets you change up a _lot_ earlier. I can trundle up hills in 4+od now that before would require me to be in 3rd. I also fitted a weber carb off a defender - the twin barrel design gives a good performance for torque, power and economy compared to the single barrel types which are a bit of a compromise.
