2.25 diesel performance

hi, I'm looking for some advice on the performance of my 2.25 diesel (3 bearing). I know they don't have the best reputation for power and I haven't driven any other series Land Rovers with the same diesel. it starts and runs ok without too much smoke, however seems to have a hard time getting into 4th and has to be really thrashed. is this normal? perhaps just a consequence of the large difference between 3rd and 4th? im just curious to figure out the health of all the timing components and injector pump without tearing it all to bits. thanks.

Just a quick query before you start worrying about the engine, what size tyres are you running? The diesel is ideally suited to 6.00/16 tyres Many people fit 7.50/16s which can leave the diesel feeling slightly over-geared, trading off even worse acceleration for slightly reduced cruising rpm. The realistic comfortable cruising speed of the diesel is about 45-50 mph and anything other than a gentle hill will require 3rd gear.

ok, that reassures me, it pulls well up to 3rd its just the large jump from 3-4. from the good starting and good sound im going to assume that the engine is at least good for a few more years/thousand miles

I would say.. define 'thrashed'?
There is no 'performance' page on the user handbook, only 62bhp diesel/77bhp petrol

As said it’s a good idea to check road wheel size and also count the teeth on your difs. Most wheels are changed for aesthetics rather than performance and sometimes the gearing of the differentials changed in an attempt to improve top speed. Your far better knowing what the transmission train is doing before looking at the engine.
