    The pipe seemed tight to me and there is no oil around the rim of the filter housing. Its not the diff guaranteed.     Thanks wammers thats what I wanted to know. I was not ignoring the VCU, more concentrating on the job in hand. The diff was not connected to the transfer box so obviously there was another problem; which turned out to be the pinion bearing. (thanks again to wammers for suggesting I check it)...

    How stiff should the front output shaft be to turn? I found the issue, stripped the axle down and pulled the shafts free. Still couldn't turn the flange. Pinion bearing. Removing the diff confirmed this.

    I would hazard a guess and say the piston rings are ####ed and some veg has vorced its way into the crankcase.

    The maximum safe angle in the handbook of my shogun said 45. I had it at about 50 and was falling out of the window. I think that was enough!
