I had this issue with my 2.5 P38 since I owned it however it has become more frequent. Even searches on BMW forums have not given me any answers.

The throttle seems to cut off when cruising along, only seems to happen below 3000 rpm. It become completely unresponsive. If I put the clutch in then try I still get no response. When I lift the clutch pedal up it starts working again.

This happens more often (now virtually every time) when setting off and changing into 2nd gear.

To explain exactly what happens: I set off in 1st, dip the clutch, select 2nd, lift the clutch up and the car slumps like my foot isn't on the accelerator. I have to then dip the clutch and bring it back up for the accelerator to become responsive again.

As you can imagine this is quite a pain in the arse setting of from the lights and frankly dangerous trying to get out of a junction. I can only avoid this by revving high into the range before changing gear.

This happened once on the motorway in the fast lane, I had to dump the clutch multipe times before the throttle became responsive and by that time i was down to 50mph.

Does it ever do it in neutral

Try blipping the throttle time snd time again
If it seems to have a delay or if it happens pulling away from idling
Your pump is starting to wear.

Its been a while but I have had the Rangie at a local Land-rover specialist for some work. Its the solenoid in the fuel pump.

Hmmm, sounds unlikely, the only solenoid in the FIP I can think of is the fuel cut off and that would stop the engine. Wammers is the man for this.

Unless it's the quantity control solenoid which would also stop the engine. If the diag said quantity control fault then that is what it will be. If it's that new pump.

It does point to fuelling as by disengaging then re-engaging the clutch I'm effectively jump starting it.

I noticed today there is a fuel pipe coming off the filter that is see-through. Never noticed it before as it was dirty. Sounds like someone may have done this for a diagnostic to see if there is any air in the system.

As I said previously its more prone to happening the lower the engine is revving.

Is it possible the fuel system has a crud build-up causing the problem? If it is I might get away with cleaning it.

Also I am unaware if this is related or even a fault: I find is stalls pretty easily. Unless in very high revs I can't just pop the clutch I have to lift it up gently.
Likewise if I try set off just on the clutch and don't give it any extra revs it simply cuts out. No matter how gentle I am. This is not very diesel like.

I put it down to a bad design, clutch plate too small for a 3ton lump. But now i'm not so sure.

The clear pipe is standard.
When did you last change the fuel filter?
There is no power below 2K rpm so yours is normal.

Not changed it since I owned it. The previous owner said he serviced it but he also told me a crock of **** as it turned out. I'm going to change it anyway.

I finally received the invoice from the garage.

The diagnostic suggested the fuel quantity actuator. So confirms a new pump is needed.
