Problem all resolved. Was a faulty brake sensor. I popped into AL Services in Poole who were very helpful and he sorted me out with the required parts. The new switch has also sort out the TC dash light always being on as well.

Thanks. I reckon you are 100% correct here! The engineer put the wire in to help diagnose where the fault was. Given it would start using the wire from the starter to the battery it certainly indicates an ignition fault. Is the ignition switch an easy part to replace or clean? Thanks

Thanks Chaps. The electrical engineer chap checked the connections on the starter motor when he came around, so I think we are good there. It is a 2003 BMW engine TD4 so not totally sure whether it is a denso starter. If they were standard on that age and model then I will order one of those...

I must also add that we had a blocked crank case breather a while back and it looks like some oil was forced out the dipstick. The starter motor sits directly below and as a result it does look like oil has contaminated the starter motor area. I will give the ideas you suggest a go. Thanks

Fitted a new turbo. All I can say is that whilst I am glad I did it, you do need the patience of a saint to tackle it. Just getting to the various nuts and jubilee clips took ages. Whilst doing it, I also spotted a weeping water pump :-(

Ok, but they look like they are copper coated rather than just steel. Studs on turbo are knackered, but 'I think' the recon turbo I am getting tomorrow will come with new studs
