problem after fitting new lift pump

Just took the new pump off again and found that the new gasket is covered in oil, only thing that I can think of that I wasn't happy about was that I couldn't get all of the old gasket off completely, would this cause the starting issues though? Please help...I'm really struggling now!!

problem after fitting new lift pump

Hmm..just noticed a burning smell from the lift pump area and a few whisps of smoke..not sure about the cam on the lever? I just put the pump in, how can you tell it's over the cam? I 'think' I got the pipes the right way, top one to fuel filter.

Ahh thank you. I've just read that you plug the timing cover and the flywheel housing, so what I was looking at was that the flywheel housing?

    Gearbox drain plug?

Sorry if this turns out I'm just being a numpty but I've got myself a bit confused. I was under the car this afternoon changing the steering damper when I noticed a threaded hole in the bottom of the gearbox bell housing, no plug, just a hole? I thought at first it was the filler/level hole but...

    Fitting a new lift pump

Going to try and fit a new lift pump to my 300tdi Disco tomorrow, I haven't done one before so was reading the haynes manual tonight, it says to make sure the pump operating lever engages correctly with the camshaft, but doesn't say how or what the correct engagement is? Also how can you see...

    Disco 1 trafficators not cancelling

Elmer d above says it all really, just to add that I bought one of the one's on ebay as mentioned and they are nicely made, fit well and have a nice positive action when the indicator cancels. 10 min job once you finally manage to pull the horn button and wheel off!

    sideways shimmy

Anyone help with this? As the car will have to come off the road any day as it's that bad. It's gone from a nice firm ride to a plate of jelly overnight! Wondering now if a shock has gone, when you go over any uneven road (all the time oop 't north) the car wobbles and feels very unsteady. I've...

I changed to Adrian Flux and haven't got a good word to say about them, I will be cancelling after just one month and going elsewhere.

    sideways shimmy

My 300tdi has all of a sudden developed a strange feeling! Up until last week it was rock solid on the road and drove very level with little bounce or sway, however yesterday it started to shimmy sideways when you went over a pot hole or a rut in the road? The feeling feels like it's coming from...

Winch bumper and spot lights question

Scubasteve1974 - I like them, I too have the same winch bumper as you (Britpart) how did you actually mount the spots on, did you just drill a hole downwards as their not very wide these bumpers? Also what size spots are they?

    squeaky steering

I wouldn't say it was a whinning sound (will check the level tomorrow though) it's definately a rubber on rubber sounding squeek..it's like having a small rodent living in your column shroud!

    squeaky steering

Yeah I thought about that, the car's been laid up for awhile and the lower shaft looks dry/rusty. What should I use to grease these or is it even worth it? Should I just replace the lower shaft all together?

    squeaky steering

Finally got round to looking at a problem that's literally driving me mad!!! When I turn the steering wheel I get a loud squeaking noise that sounds like rubber rubbing together. I thought it was the back of the vinyl steering wheel rubbing against the shroud as I had the steering wheel off...

    winch bumpers and number plates

Hmm sounds like a right grey old area this, waying up the options I think I'm going to go for the jap import look, if you don't mind me copying you Mr.Noisey (after all my winch bumper looks the same as yours too :) It is crazy though, prior to the MOT the number plate was on the back seat, on...

    winch bumpers and number plates

I've a winch bumper and winch fitted to my 300tdi Disco and in my haste to get it MOT'd and back on the road I fitted a standard rectangular number plate onto the nearside bit of the bumper, in doing so I covered the hi-lift jack hole and the swivel recovery hole, a friend of mine says I've...

    Slow 300tdi lift pump?

Hi Just bought myself a 1995 Disco 300tdi as an off road project, just started 'tinkering' and gave it its first good run out yesterday and found a few problems! The car 'chuggs' and is quite sluggish to the extent you have to watch yourself pulling out of juctions as it just doesn't pick up...

    disco 300tdi steering wheel replacement

I was also going to try and do this but decided to stick with the old wheel in the end for 2 reasons, firstly I believe the ES steering wheel uses a rotary coupling which contains the wiring for the airbag and for the horn, whereas as you know the older non-airbag wheel just has two basic wires...

    Just saying hello!

Just joined the forum as I've bought a 1995 discovery 300tdi, my wife thinks I've lost the plot and having a mid-life as I've been spending the cold dark evenings..tinkering! Currently enjoying getting my hands dirty and loving not having to worry about all that electronics guff that you get...
