My gearbox dipstick also does this and has done for the 7 years that I have owned it. gearbox operates perfectly though so I just push it back when I have the bonnet up and ignore it. I would have thought if it was a problem, something would have broke by now?

Do the new MOT regs apply to new vehicles? Or is the govt. retro applying the regs?

Have you looked underneath the passenger seat, to see if that has the same piece of metal attached?

I had an intermittent fault with the brake lights a couple of year ago and was so ****ed off with having to take everything out I binned the seats and rear trim. Just bare metal back there now. Much easier to work on, also easier to see any rust. :)

I know. I get back for a couple of months each year. The last time was Feb/March this year. 3 weeks of that were spent laying on my back underneath the Disco, scraping/grinding/priming/painting etc, etc... Its a fight but, I hoping it will last. Its going to be a very unusual sight over here...

Ive used them several times under a 2006 Dodge charger and a Tesla model S (heavy car). They were rated to 12 tons and never felt like they were going to be a problem. Only issue was that the were not as high as the steel ones I have. Probably only a foot high.

Thanks for the link, I wasn't happy with the self tappers that were fitted to the over sill trim after having a rear arch welded in. I didn't know where to get the original plastic trim fixers. Now ordered enough to cover both sides (other sill gonna need replacing next year).
