I spent a happy day yesterday with my old 'Rover, performing a full fluid change and inspection. Sadly, my back is in clip this morning. I think I have to accept that I'm a bit too old to be scrabbling around on the floor these days.

I'm completely out of touch with servicing costs - I've always serviced my own cars and motorbikes, simply because I know then that everything is done correctly.

So the question is, if I take the old girl to a specialist for a service, what sort of costs am I looking at? I know it takes me about 6 hours, and so I guess I'd be looking at £300 labour, plus the £150 or so in fluids and filters. So all in, I'm guessing about £500 plus the dreaded VAT. Is that ballpark correct?

Service, inc, timing belt kit and a new tyre (General Grabber A/T) at my local indie was around £550. I've not dared to look into the prices but Main stealers have the Heritage deal which is supposed to greatly reduce the cost of servicing older vehicles. Although greatly reduced when your starting at greatly inflated is like how long is a piece of string.

If that is ALL fluids, timing belt change on a D1, AT tyre fitted and balanced, including the dreaded VAT, then your indie is doing a very good deal. IMHO. I was once quoted £300 plus vat just for the timing belt.

I wouldn't go anywhere else. Landys in for mot next week, I know swivel seals need doing, but I just drop it off and tell them just fix whatever needs fixing. I havechecked over what they have done in the past and not been disappointed with the standard of work, or felt that they have done anything unnecessary. May be a rare thing these days, I don't know. They also organise a customers guided greenlaning day from time to time and all the owners and staff drive older Land Rovers.
No, I don't work for them, just happy to give credit where its due.

From my past experience at a LR main dealer a full annual service for my D1 was £760 inc vat but not including auto box fluid change, the same with an independent was £550.00 inc vat and that included the autobox fluid change.
Now I do my own servicing other than auto fluid change as that's a bit more involved, so other than that I don't use either

At my Independent LR garage £300 would cover oil and air filters, spark plugs, oils and a safety check, basically everything other than the gearbox fluid and antifreeze, I could get a 10% discount on that as my disco is over 10 years old.

Well, it's all done for the next 12 months or so, but when it's coming due next year, I think I might 'phone around and get some quotes - I can't be done with this bad back.
