    Battery light flashing

I would say failing alternator most likely cause but could be bad connection. If it is the alternator it will gradually get worse until it fails completely,

    leather seats

I think you would be safe fitting leather seats from another FL - it would be almost impossible for them to ascertain if they were fitted by you at a later date or fitted at the factory as an upgrade. It's not something that they would be interested in anyway as it doesn't change the risk...

TD4 2000 White Smoke, engine oil in exhaust

Definitely oil seals on the exhaust turbine of the Turbo, luckily not the inlet side as that can cause the engine to self fuel, over rev and blow up. Sort the seals or get a re-con turbo and all should be well - might still smoke a bit under revs for a while as it burns the leaked oil out of...

    love my landy

My sister used to have a Volvo which started to lose water slowly, main dealer diagnosed head gasket, £1,200 to fix, I found it to be a crack in the expansion tank where the pipe flange was at the bottom............. I notice that for many vehicles now pattern part expansion tanks are readily...

Help please is my engine destroyed?

They might just be washing their hands of it as it would be a high risk job for them replacing the turbo without knowing for certain if the engine was terminally damaged anyway. Would also clarify exactly what disconnecting the turbo means? If they have disconnected the oil feed then there...

Cheap De-cat pipes made to order!

That's good to hear that some testers are taking a more level approach to the test rather than that prescribed. EGR systems currently not tested but what's the betting they will be next?

Cheap De-cat pipes made to order!

Was correct up until Feb of this year. Diesels of any age will now fail if they were fitted with a cat or DPF as standard which has since been removed. (Unless you know a sympathetic tester or you just knock the guts out of them)

Mingjun Motors M3 S1 - Chinese Land Rover Freelander knock-off

There is a difference between copying and cloning though.... I've bought a few power tools recently with "Chonda" engines - Chinese copy of the Honda GX160/GX200. If you get a good one they are great, and about a quarter of the cost. Most of the parts are interchangeable they are so close a...

Just been to look at a FL1

If you are used to a Defender the gearbox will feel sloppy - on a Defender the gearstick sits on top of the gearbox and operates it directly, on a FL the gearbox is in the engine bay and operated by linkages - hence it will never feel the same. If it was a cracked slave cylinder mounting, this...

Just been to look at a FL1

If there was a problem with a dragging clutch, you would be likely to get crunching between all gears, not just 1st and 2nd, though it is more likely between these two because of the differential between RPM. It could be that the synchro rings are worn in the gearbox, in it's early stages this...

    TD4 Engine Smoking and Knocking!

Andrew I'm struggling to make sense of this - the high pressure pump has three connections - there is diesel in from the tank, high pressure diesel to the fuel rail and low pressure diesel return to the tank. I can't see how a leak from the pulley shaft could cause diesel to enter the engine...

The regulator is viewed by some as part of the pump as it is integral to it but it can be changed separately and is easy to remove.

Mingjun Motors M3 S1 - Chinese Land Rover Freelander knock-off

Yes I have - and I know that the FL1 didn't perform that well but when crash testing and safety became a strong selling point and of media interest in the mid 2000's - the design of the FL1 was already 10 years old. I know the Fiesta's and the Clio's of the time fared better (statistically) in...

    freelander seats

You can't beat Volvo and Jag seats! Lots in scrap yards at low cost and often with heating. I haven't done it personally but the seats in the FL1 seem very high and there is a lot of air between the seat base and the floor - looks like a good base to fit something else. I have helped someone...

    TD4 Engine Smoking and Knocking!

What else can you say other than take it to a garage who know what they are doing rather than one who which does not and will mess about and p*ss away your money trying to diagnose by swapping expensive parts rather than science. Would also suggest you let them make up their own mind rather...

Can a Freelander be reliable ????

All very true - have bought a couple of MGF's in the past as non-runners with head gasket failures when actually the problem was the metal coolant pipes that run back to front under the car had corroded and leaked - one of the engines survived the overheat with no other work needed - it was a...

    towing

Useful but confusing... says that loaded weight of the trailer and car combined must not exceed the MAM, but is not specific as to whether this is the actual loaded weight (1 passenger or 5?) or the maximum weight? I would say an overloaded car by 100Kg towing an a trailer overloaded by 250Kg...
