just got me a landy:) freelander 1.8s on a 2000 plate, lovely looking but have a few issues ie , reverse lights either don't work or stick on, rumbles when cornering on a full lock and a slight coolant leak. All this aside it drives fine, what I would like to know from fellow members is after a two year period of using a 1995 rav 4 with 200,000 on the clock and still going fine, have I made a mistake, thanks, Andrew.

You havnt made a mistake.. 1.8 engine needs water otherwise it is a very bad day!

Change the reverse light switch,

Does it rumble on both locks or worse on one only?

Welcome to the mad house!

Welcome to the forum.

Find the coolant leak quick.

That's quick with a capital F.

Give all your pipes a squeeze, check the reservoir for cracks, check water pump area, etc.
I'm sure there's loads to check actually but the K16 peeps will probably tell more :)

Check the oil for water (mayonnaise).
Check inlet manifold gasket (common).
Rumble could be the IRD starting to fail. Check the VCU (One Wheel Up Test) for this.
Reverse light is likely to be the swtich.

Welcome. lol, you might be able to answer your own question rather quickly with a couple of those symptoms!

As the guys say - the Rover K Series will blow head gaskets and warp heads at very low levels of coolant loss - so sort that PDQ. That is of course if its not the HG that's leaking already - check for oil in water and visa verse.

The rumbling on lock could be a number of things - lots of which could be easy/cheap to resolve such as bushes and drop links. It could though also be something a lot more catastrophic. As a simple suggestion I'd take the props & VCU off - disconnect them from the front & rear diffs and 4 bolts in the middle. It takes about 30 minutes to see if the noises stop and will go a good way to informing you where to look for problems. While you're under there - make sure the rear diff looks solidly in place and its mounts haven't worn (particularly the front one).

water leak ?look at the header tank has it got cracks in it if so change it. my wife's 1800 had the head gasket done and after about 3 years started to loose water ,then I noticed the cracks around the filler cap ,changed it no more water loss.

My sister used to have a Volvo which started to lose water slowly, main dealer diagnosed head gasket, £1,200 to fix, I found it to be a crack in the expansion tank where the pipe flange was at the bottom.............

I notice that for many vehicles now pattern part expansion tanks are readily available so must be a common problem.

Hi, thanks for the reassurance and advice, only noticed the rumble when turning to the right usually at roundabouts and u turning so will perform a u turn to the left to see if it still rumbles, ta.

Hi thanks for the advice, water seems to be coming from low down on the engine block to the left, a slow trickle on to the tray.
