this sounds like a fuel pump issue,i had a similar issue a few months ago, driving along and lost all power but it kept going, next time i tried to start it wouldnt run so i just tapped the pump on the inner wing and it started, starting was hit and miss and no power when it di run ,new pump...

according to the data for the glow plug ,R= 0.8 ohm each glow plug should be drawing 15 amps

fitting a new crankcase breather wont have any effect on poor starting, you have most likely disturbed some wiring possibly the fuel rail pressure sensor,

stop worrying about nothing, are you really likely to be that deep in mud ? there are more important things to be concerened about when you have a freelander :D,

a few more details would help ie milage age etc, but if you have a done anywhere hear 100k, start suspecting the fuel pump,/fuel rail sensor etc

space monkey, what do you mean by reseating, ? the ones i have done are sealed by a copper washer, very unlikely compression would leak past the close tolerances, and the retaining clamp hold it very firmly inplace so do not understand your comment ?

kev , dont you already have an indication on the dash to tell you the glowplug relay is on ?

changing the forth plug will most prob solve your problem , as has already been said it hasnt been changed because its the difficult one to get at , either change it or live with the 30 seconde of smoke

an led light will only indicate power is getting to the glow plugs, you really need an ameter and monitor the current, a quick / easy test is to unplug each glowplug , attach a wire on the positive side of the battery, and briefly touch the connection on each plug inturn , there will be agood...

have you checked the injectors ?

check your glow plugs, they are most probably u/s

Hase any work done in this area ? I have never had to remove my steering rack but I'm not sure just refitting the bolts would be good enough , do theyscrew into aluminium casting? I'm thinking they may have been over tightened and stripped the thread ,

yes a fuel pump can cause this problem, also check your fuel rail pressure sensor conections good luck

whats with the vcu paranoia :confused: just be aware if things start to feel tight- check it out, its a 2001 freelander worth less that £2k, if you start going down the route of replacment on all the items that can go bang you might as well get a new car, :rolleyes:
