Hello,

I ám new to this forum as here i could find already lot's of info...
Now i am stuck.
I got the starter solenoid problem and with great help of this forum i successful gave it a good clean and sanding the contacts worked out great.

After putting back together it was start en go.
But after some 10 Km the next problem started.
Now the yellow engine signal is on and the fans start running 5 sec after starting the motor.
My temp readout is at 0 and does not raise...
After starting the motor again it runs very bad.

Reset by taking off the batt lead solves this problem ones but next start is same problem...

I found the return tube of the cooling system leaking a little bit but solving this didn't help.
I red somewhere that disconnecting the cooling temp sensor gave the same problem but you also got a high temp readout...

Now my real problem..
Found a nice cooling system parts brackdown showing the tempsensor in the bottom radiator tube but in my freelander there is no sensor in this tube...
I checked serveral other places but no improvement.

Who knows where to look in my freelander 1 of 2001 with 2,5V6 motor en automatic gearshift...

What year is your Freelander? Where are you located?

The temperature sensor is next to the thermostat in the V of the engine on the KV6, in between the inlet (intake) manifolds.

As far as I know only the NAS (north American version, not sure which countries had that version) has a "secondary" temperature thermostat sensor in the bottom large radiator hose next to the radiator.

Are you able to confirm your temperature reading with an ODB2 reader?

Be aware that the KV6 engine Freelander can sometime need additional attempts to get all the air out of the cooling system.

Do you have the RAVE factory workshop book? It has all of this explained.
 
You need to put a code reader on it. Have you trapped the wiring under the starter when you refitted it?
As previously mentioned, the CTS is under the inlet manifold next to the thermostat.

Well you get the 100% bonus...
This early morning i woke up and realized my bad...
I checked and found the trapped wire underneath the startmotor.
I took all apart and found just the insulation of the 2 brown wires damaged but nothing some tape could repair...

But after all was back together the yellow motor signal is still lid and the fans are running...

Do i really need a computer to reset the engines system??
Or should i suspect more problems??

Thanks for the bonus ;) Although it doesn't sound like you are out the woods yet.
The simple answer is NO. Once the fault has cleared, the ECU should put the light off but log the fault as a historic or pending fault.
If you still have a MIL then there is still something a miss. What color were the trapped wires?
Maybe you have damaged an output transistor in the ECU?
 
There are cheap elm327 odb2 reader on eBay. I use the wifi one along with dashcmd on my iphone and that is enough for the basics. I do not remember if the 2001 non NAS kv6 is ODB2 compatible though. Maybe someone else knows.

When i took off the black tape i saw 2 identical brown wires and i believe i saw some red liner on the brown...
I am an electronics engineer original and thus familiar with soldering fine electronics. Where would i find a scematics diagram of the ECU???
 
The wiring colour codes are the same for NAS and UK spec engines. The only difference is the addition of the MAF and an extra thermostat sensor on the NAS models.
 
Well, today i was at the local workshop who helped me to readout the computer.
Yes I got p0118 error meaning grounded temperature sensor...

I will need to take it appart and recheck the trapped wire...

Where would i find the international Rave??
I got only NAS versions so far..

Ok so you have a grounded temperature sensor wire. It shouldn't be to hard to find.
The NAS manual is better than nothing ;)

Well, nothing is easy if you don't have a workshop with the right tools...
But i succeeded.:rolleyes:
First i found the right pins on the 90 pins ECM connector...
This was already a bit of a pain as so many different models uses different ECM and thus different connectors...:confused:

Than i measured open resister witch means broken wire. (no short to ground was measured):eek:
Than i decided to take out the throttle pod and again the startmotor to get some working space...
Finally i located the temp sensor underneath the intake manifold in front of the motor and its wires (pink green and pink black) went to a connector underneath the throttle pod. The connector was only 5 cm away from the startmotor and my bad of catching the wires...:D
I took the wires apart and soldered them back together.
I measured again and found 5 Kohm and no shortage to ground...
Some additional insulation tape and all could back together.
Again some measuring just before i connected the ECM again...

After some 4 hours it was start and run and i have a working temp readout and no fans kicking in...:dance:
