when you replace a front wheel bearing on a defender do they come off with the hub or do they weld themselves to the stub axle?and if they do this do you need a new stub axle?

mines a 300 tdi,yes thought if its fooked might be better to get a stub axle in just in case

cheers,thanks for that getting the characteristic whine that a bearings on its way,only changed it a year ago,was a allmakes though,so will put a timken in this time garage changed it last time but doing this one myself now the tool kits building

Some times you can get away with using an angle grinder with thin cutting disc and cutting most of the way through the inner race with bearing removed and then using a sharp chisel and hammer to split it but make sure you don't damage the stub axle hitting it

+1 a diagonal cut most of the way and a sharp belt usually does the trick
Worth trying some heat first though

I did mine in a car park with basic hand tools using the old race as a drift
+1 I keep an old race with a small 5mm piece cut out to use as a drift.
Tap it all the way home and then the small cut allows it to easily pop bk out.

5mm? I cut a slot with a 1mm disk
stainless steel cutting disc? there quite thin
