Hi everyone - have a 4.4 m62 l322. It has some eml flashing issues and potential vacuum leak issues. Trying to get to the bottom of it and have noticed this hose/tube coming out of the top front of bank two not connected to anything... should it be like that ? any advise would be great thanks!

Hi Andy - thanks didnt know you were on here too - so that’s as expected except it looks Lilke the corrugated plastic pipe should sit with it? On a side not the intake boot that goes on the throttle body, the bigger of the two hoses has a squeeze either side clip to disconnect. This squeeze mechanism doesn’t work so it’s only loosely pushed on would this cause a vac leak?
 
I know the one you mean, I did look at your thread on FFRR but there were so many hoses and green arrows I didn’t know which one you meant.
The clip is not great on these, if you give it a whiff of brake cleaner around the join without setting yourself or you at on fire it will probably cough if it has a vacuum leak but do it cold.
If you have EML you should have codes to read.
 
Will carb cleaner or easy start do the same trick? Is it likely my issue?

Yep I do - it’s a real treat - it is either solid with p1171 and p1174 which is a mixture issue I believe or it’s flashes - usually on idle and just after starting to which I get bonus faults of cylinder 1-4 misfire - never 5-8 though - 1-2 seem the worst.

If I unplug the maf all works fine no faults except for the maf but is this a red herring I seem to recall it runs closed loop (or open loop?) of a sensor goes down so it stops using sensor and reverts to pre programmed values?
 
Carb cleaner is ok probably easy start as well it’s just to give a difference in engine tone.
@Saint.V8 has had the 4.4 a lot longer than me but air leaks are definitely not a good idea , you could check that your maf and throttle body are all sealed tighter than a tight thing so again a whiff of highly flammable liquid will either find your leak or torch your car.
I’m away or I’d google the codes for you.
I have CAT issues I think that are causing me problems and I had a multiple misfire fault a few months back which I think I attributed to my cats.
How are your o2 sensors as they could separate faults between banks
 
well they are quite old but the voltages are fluctuating ok on the tool for all 4 depending on load...
don't worry can google it its a mixture issue.

A possible side note or not

has a weird blowing over a bottle sound but aside from that she sounds good to me...

Second vid sounds a bit water pump but can only listen on my phone, you could drop off the auxiliary belt briefly but only run for a few seconds as you won’t have a water pump. I had an electronic stethoscope and pointer that I diagnosed mine with
 
Funny you should say that - but with my limited knowledge I though the same... plus the day that started I go the coolant low warning so a little tell tale. I’m away at the moment but told the wife to only drive the ff in emergency until I get it checked. If it is that would you do the alt while you were in there? Guessing this is probably not linked to my eml issues

I would only do the alternator if yours is suspect and water pump wouldn’t cause EML
 
About the thought to change the alt - I had this engine in a 5 series about 10years ago had done 130k at the time.. the water pump let go so I changed it then... no word of a lie the next week the alt does not sure if that was just bad luck but that’s why I asked...

Looked at that post that’s not for m62 but does mention maf as a cure.. tempted to buy another one but surely I should get more than 18months from a Bosch? As I say with maf disconnected it runs nice - is that a sign or not?
 
Shouldn't be able to wiggle the VCF, unless the fan to VC hub bolts are loose.

Flashing EML is indication of a misfire that could damage the cats....you say you are getting misfire codes....and looking at them they are all on one back 1-4 (the one with the oil cap).

Have you had the coil cover off to check for oil in the plug wells?
 
Good question - they were full of oil about 8weeks back but no code so I changed the plugs and did the rocker covers not checked since but I’d hope they weren’t full
 
Right - firstly I’m going to ‘try’ and man up and do the water pump - ordered a genuine one from Bmw as it was marginally cheaper with new o rings and gasket - £200!!! £30 refund on return of old unit but still!

Anyway I have been trying to post since 8am I got up early and pulled coils one and two bearing in mind they were full of oil before I did rocker covers I think they look fine - so don’t think it’s that here are pics

Think I will do water pump first then come back on this issue one thing at a time unless some wisdom comes to anyone?
 
i would hope the oil in the plug bores is left over from before the cam covers were done, if you have a compressor then blow them out or some spray degreaser and a can of air duster but as ant says they need to be dry.
you then need to clear the codes and retest to see if your o2 sensor codes are still coming up
 
Hi saint I wrote a post saying thanks for the guide last night must not have submitted it - I asked two things, do I need to use gasket sealant or can I just use the new gasket as I have everything now except that.

Second question I did this many moons ago on a 535 same engine and I remember pulling the pump and a pipe came cane with it I then spent an hour trying to refit it? Any idea how to prevent that?

Those oil wells had about an inch of oil in each so I imagine it’s residual - and it didn’t misfire even then..
 
Did the pump - only thing I’d add to the diy is if youvve never taken the belt off have a spare handy, also I bought new orings - oh and obviously one of the pipes came out of the V course it did! I put gasket seal t on and pushed back. I have a bit of belt squeal atm - does the tensioner tension more when engine is running? Cheers
