Removed full front suspension and arms passenger side and drivers side

Those inner wings look pretty rusty. I'm guessing it's spent time on salt laden roads.
You might want to remove the arch liners to check the sills, as those are known rust traps, even on cars without any rust on the inner wings.
Yip, they look pretty bad. I had to patch up a hole in my wheel arch behind the arch liner. Mud and dirt gather then stay wet and salty from road salt causing rust.

Today I am putting the new drivebelts on as had to change the alternator last week. And it was a bit of a pain tbh which I will go into later depending on how this goes…..

Mine packed up Monday, was indeed a pain in the arse not helped by being supplied the wrong replacement (wrong plug fitting) at first, so had to exchange that. Then that one was a pig to get the 3 bolts to line up, which they eventually did, only to find out the plug socket on the back was about 4mm longer so I had to fit the plug in before fitting the top bolt. So I had to undo that bolt which meant another half hour trying to realign the goddam bolts!!!
Anyway, seemed to remember fitting the auxiliary belt was awful but turned out to be one of the easier parts of the whole job.
Then just had to crawl about in the heat reassembling the bits that came off although I also topped up the IRD as it seems to be dropping oil which is a new thing I think.
Anyway, it’s working and charging, tested with multimeter (cos I have got one and dammit I’m gnna use it for something).
See what next week brings. It’s never over with a Landrover.
On the plus side I think the old alternator was the original so not bad for 166000 miles. And it packed up near home so wasn’t a drama.

Had a local Land Rover group meetup today, followed by a little bit of light laning. That was all good apart from embarrasment before we even got going with the engine not turning over as we were about to set off. It appears I now have an internittent starting issue! It also wouldn't start again this evening on a quick run to Co-Op, and a couple of weeks ago on the school run. At first I was suspecting a dodgy connection somewhere as after fiddling with cables the car would fire up, but this evening I needed a jump start. I've just realised that I think my battery is over 8 years old so that is probably prime suspect.

Do you get a solenoid click??
Measure cranking voltage.
Low voltage can be insufficient to pull the starter in and make the contacts up. It could be worn contacts or high resistance as you say. Earth leads can be checked by measuring voltage drop across chassis to engine block.

Mine had an intermittent starting problem a few months ago. Turned the key and nothing, no solenoid nothing. Tried jump starting; still nothing. Replaced the starter motor then it was fine for about a week then the same thing happened. I put the old starter motor back in and it has been working fine since then, got a refund on the new one I bought. Battery is only a couple of years old so I knew it wasn’t that.
Reading this back I can see that it’s no help really.
I have got myself a spare starter motor from another TD4 for when mine stops working again.
Wish I had bothered getting the alternator too as replaced that this week.
Stupid car.
Yours sounds like it’s the battery though.

It's a bit of an odd one as two or three weeks ago in the first instance the car had been fine then on a random occurance it did not turn over. No click or anything. Just dead. I looked at starter connections, including the signal connection (which was not overly secure) and after a wiggle it started. That's it I thought. Cue to this moring and this time there was a solid single click from the solenoid but no turning. A bit of wiggling of cables did nothing. An application of jump leads did nothing too. Some head scratching and cleaning of terminals then resulted into the engine firing up. The third occurance this evening saw fast clicking from the solenoid but no turning of the engine. A jump start fired it into life pretty quickly though. I'm fairly sure that it is the battery after this evening and I think that we probably didn't have the jump leads on long enough this morning. The only nagging doubt about the battery I have is that on the first two occasions, when the engine did eventually crank it was not slow at all. It cranked perfectly normally and fired up fine.

Given the age of the battery though I will test it tomorrow.

Don't be surprised if you have more than one issue. Maybe a bad connection AND a duff battery.
