Our P38 has turned into a 2 ton vibrator at 45-50mph. SWMBO says she hasn't noticed it (can't quite decide whether this is good or not), but I have and so has my friendly mobile LR mechanic. Unfortunately, he can't work out where it's coming from...

The vibration happens under all loads and under no load. Here's the things so far ruled out: tyres (replaced), wheel bearings (checked), front prop UJs (replaced), front diff (reconditioned), rear prop UJs (checked), rear diff (checked), brakes binding (checked). The VCU has also been checked.

Mechanic has suggested I go somewhere which has a rolling road. But before I do this, does anyone have any ideas where to look next?

Ta.

I take it the replacement tyres were brand new and balanced (front and rear)???

Are the wheels orginal P38 fitment with the correct size wheel nuts???

Yep, all four tyres (General ATs) brand new and balanced. And vibration was same before and after tyres were fitted.

Wheels are original 18" Hurricanes with original nuts.

Steering damper or drop link from box? Handbrake fallen apart internally? Try it in neutral about 10mph.

Thanks for suggestions.

Will try handbrake tomorrow - although car has just had a service and pre-MoT check (today) so surely handbrake problems would have been picked up?

Mechanic did say he had one customer with the same problem - replaced steering damper and links, plus shock absorbers, but problem remained. Which is why he probably suggested getting it on a rolling road...

Tested handbrake today - 15mph in neutral - worked fine.

Also took the car for a spin this morning round some country lanes, and then checked again for binding brakes (rear pads and brake fliud were changed yesterday). No brake smell, all wheels were cold, so I guess brakes are not binding (although they now squeal :().

Hey, what about that handbrake test? Mine makes a pretty horrible sound (probably connected with the drivetrain slack anyway) even when applied at 1mph... should I even try it? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the handbrake on LR's shouldn't be used at all when moving...

Would like you to let us know how it goes, load of people start threads but they don't tell us when they find the problem.

I too have a 70mph vibration problem but think I know the problem. Its a warped disk, when you brake and hold the brake pedal right to the end of stopping you can feel a slight pulse comming back. Just done a trip to Scotland and a Aston Martin went past at the speed of light and sounded fantastic! I said wow and she said OK but he dosn't have a 70 mph wobble ner ner ner ner.
