thinking about it you are right - bolt goes into the VCU end.............oops
should have remembered - its only a couple of weeks since i changed mine
 
Ye. I double checked tonight. The whole vcu and rear shaft spin and the front doesn't. Looks like I'll be doing some welding
 
Cheers for that. Iv also watched the bearing replacement video. My plan is to remove the whole prop. Check splines and weld prop to vcu if necessary. If that fails I'll buy a new vcu and front prop. Is the piece that comes out of the rear diff and join the shaft the ird ?
 
Reckon I'm going to book into Bell Engineering later this week and have free checkover. Reading this has spooked me!
 
I'm going to stop reading other threads ad everything worrys me. Un matched tyres. Vcu's. Props. Condensation. 3 amigos. Lol. I have lots of work to do hopefully before the snow
 
Put yer hand on yer vcu after a trip out and find out what the temp is. Ideal thing is to measure it propper but not everyone has a temp meter. If it's feking hot then there's a potentual problem, we think. If you do the "One Wheel Up Test" or the "Turnip Test" then you'll be able to compare results with others.
 
Re tyres.

I have 6mm front & 4.5mm rear tread depth. Same make and model of tyres.

Should I swap front to back?

Rang Bell Engineering today. Helpful guy & said ring back next week to book for a free transmission check. TBH, I'd rather pay him something but let's see what the result is first!

Measure the temp of yer vcu first from cold after a fixed trip.
Yes, now swap tyres.
Measure the temp of yer vcu again from cold after the same fixed trip.
Report back with measurements. If yer int got a meter to measure it then guess with yer hand.

Just wondering if your prop shafts are the right length. Never know then yto come apart or be stripped like that.
